Podcast #190: A Love Letter to the Defense

Coffey, Fank, and Pope break down a sensational performance by the Baylor Defense in a win on the road against Kansas State, plus look forward to a Homecoming tilt against Texas Tech on Saturday.

Happy Homecoming, everybody. Your Baylor Bears are ranked at #22 in the AP and #23 in the Coaches’ Poll for the first time since 2016 and have the opportunity to get bowl eligible after six games. But first, we’re breaking down an absolutely impressive performance on the road against the Kansas State Wildcats in Manhattan last weekend.

We’re spending quite a bit of time on what this defense has been able to accomplish. They caused havoc on just over 30% of the Wildcats’ offensive plays, and are doing so at a clip of 21.1% on the season. That’s the best number in the Big 12. We’re spending some time on Bravvion Roy, someone who pretty quietly set up residence in the Kansas State backfield. The Bears had 15 tackles for loss from TEN different contributors. That’s pretty impressive. Clay Johnston, Blake Lynch, Bravvion, Jalen Pitre, JT Woods, James Lynch, Jairon McVea, Jordan Williams, Grayland Arnold, and James Lockhart all spent some time in the backfield, while Raleigh Texada, Terrel Bernard, and Kalon Barnes all broke up passes in this game. It’s as impressive a performance as we can remember in recent memory.

We’re also talking about the offensive side of the ball, which after a bit of a slow start got rolling in the second quarter, going 99 yards in just over 2 minutes for a score. We’re talking about yet another solid performance by the entire WR corps, and a good outing by Charlie Brewer. Tyquan Thornton is really coming into his own as a major playmaking threat.

Past that, we’re looking forward to what Texas Tech Red Raiders will bring to Waco on Saturday. The Red Raiders are coming off a massive win against Oklahoma State in Lubbock last weekend and are looking to spoil the Bears’ perfect season thus far. Will Jett Duffey go on another tear? Will the Bears be able to lock down T.J. Vasher? Plus we’re talking Picks of the Week, as always! For whatever reason, Fank remains as enamored with Iowa as always.

Enjoy! For they are the we of us.
