Friday Afternoon Video: The Suffers - Gwan

"Just a few guys (and a girl) having a good time playing music that they love."

Our streak of local, Texas music continues this week with The Suffers, an up and coming band out of Houston. Here's more on them from Paste Magazine:

Texas 10-piece The Suffers are a force, with frontwoman Kam Franklin leading a soulful live show that always seems to leave raving fans in its wake. But as much as Franklin may have become the face of the group, The Suffers began with bassist bassist Adam Castaneda and keyboardist Pat Kelly: the two have gradually added new members since The Suffers was born in 2011. Ultimately, Franklin was recruited to front the band, and The Suffers became the band fans see today. Check out this live video of the band performing "Gwan," a song that is as intense lyrically as it is on the stage.

As a calmer, slower partner to this week's FAV, here are The Suffers at SXSW this year with "Giver."

The band was also recently mentioned by the New York Times in their SXSW preview:

The Houston rap stars Willie D and Bun B have championed this 10-piece collective, even though their sound is built on Gulf Coast soul, reggae and R&B, not hip hop. "Gwan," a preview of a full-length set for release later this year, features a bold conga breakdown and devastating Chaka Khan-like vocals from Kam Franklin.

And with that, I'll leave you with their upcoming tour schedule and the main video above for "Gwan." Happy Friday!
