Arizona downs No. 2 Oregon, 31-24
Oregon, Baylor's manic cousin in the Pacific Northwest, fell last night to Rich Rodriguez's Arizona Wildcats. Arizona has strange magical abilities that help them beat Oregon (evidenced by their ability to knock off the Pac-12 favorite two years in a row now) and winning in Autzen is no small feat. Costly penalties for pass interference and unsportsmanlike conduct gave Arizona more chances than they normally would have gotten, and the result was a huge Thursday night upset. If you recall, Oregon also lost to Stanford on a Thursday night last year. Oregon hates weekdays.
Marcus Mariota looked less than himself, despite throwing for three touchdowns and catching a fourth. He stalled Oregon drives by falling flat on his face throwing into heavy coverage, and squandered a potential game-tying drive when Arizona LB Scooby Wright III stripped the ball from him to put the final nail in Oregon's neon pink coffin.
The Ducks were ranked No. 2 in the nation. Assuming Baylor takes care of business against Texas, the Bears are set to move up in the polls.
Baylor vs. Texas
What looked like a marquee matchup before the season looks like just another game now, as Baylor takes a short trip down I-35 to visit the floundering Texas Longhorns. The Stronghorns have show sparks of brilliance on defense, particularly in the secondary, but suspect linebacking and a miserable offense have the typical powerhouse facing long odds against their former doormat.
