Friday Daily Bears Report: Texas Looms

A game of shootyhoops is set to be played tomorrow, anticipation for junior day continues to build, and there is snow (you read that correctly) in Waco.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

After today's meteorological occurrences, I'm tempted to declare that Texas brings terrible weather with them whenever they come to Waco. Seriously though, the last time it was this cold on campus was the morning of the UT football game. The good news is that Baylor took home a Big 12 championship that day. While it seems unlikely that Scott Drew will hoist a regular-season championship trophy at this point in the season, a win over a surprising Texas team tomorrow would be an encouraging sign for Baylor basketball fans.

In-Season News: Men's and Women's Basketball

As stated above, the men's basketball team will take the court against Texas tomorrow. Tipoff is at 12:30 in the Ferrell Center. If you're a student and you're reading this, I fully expect you to be there. The crowd against OU brought a great student presence and the best overall atmosphere of the season thus far. Hopefully this trend can continue. That said, I hope the Bear Pit will elect to make noise at all times on Saturday. The sudden calm that came over the crowd seemed to legitimately affect the team's momentum in the second half, and our offensive production suffered drastically without crowd support.

Texas has been a pleasant surprise for the Big 12 this year. The Longhorns sit at 13-4 and third in the Big 12. Pretty much everything you need to know about the team can be found in the links below. This is not a team that the Bears should underestimate, but it is one that they should beat if they play anywhere near their potential.

I always enjoy seeing walk-ons earn scholarships. It's a great way to recognize some of the hardest-working players on a team in a way that can extraordinarily affect their lives. Congratulations, Logan.

The next women's basketball game will be at Oklahoma State at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday. The Cowgirls (somehow being unable refer to them as the 'pokes is unsettling) are 17-1 and should give the Lady Bears all they can handle.

Off-Season News: Football and Baseball

Junior day is fast approaching, and anyone who follows recruiting should be positively salivating at the amount of talent Baylor is bringing in.

I mean, what else do you need to know?

This stadium is going to be unspeakably gorgeous. Sometimes I go out of my way to drive past it and I just still marvel at what Baylor University has created. When all the cosmetic work to the outside of the stadium is finished, it will be among the most beautiful buildings in the entire nation. Just... wow.

In the shadows, baseball waits and watches. I can't wait until there are more real updates from Coach Smith and his crew.

The Best of the Rest

Track has traveled to the snowy wilderness of Kentucky. At least the meet is indoors.

Leftovers

The Dallas Stars trounced the Toronto Maple Leafs in Dallas last night. The 7-1 win wasn't the most entertaining part of the night, however. The Stars made the best of Canadian pop star Justin Bieber's arrest early yesterday morning to troll the Maple Leafs into oblivion. This kind of humor from a professional sports organization is absolutely delightful. The Stars' official twitter account later acknowledged the joke.

Gone are the days of only having a mere 35 college football bowl games. Starting in 2014, we'll have 39, counting two Playoff semifinals and the new National Championship. So let's take a very, very early look at how this thing could shape up.
