Baylor Baseball moved to .500 last night with a 4-2 win over Louisiana Tech, and senior Cal Towey extended his RBI streak to 8 games. Junior Josh Michalec earned his first win of the season, providing 1.1 innings of relief and striking out the final batter of the 5th inning to strand two batters. Bobby McCormack and Ryan Smith finished the game for the Bears, allowing no more runs on no hits. Smith received credit for the save, his third of the season, pitching 2.2 innings and striking out two. The Bears are back in action today at 4:00 PM, looking for their first season sweep.
Baylor Softball's Lindsey Hays was named the Big 12 Player of the Week after her 3-for-4 performance in the Lady Bears' upset win over Arizona State last weekend, including a home run and two RBI. Hays, a redshirt freshman, is the first Lady Bear fielder to win this award since Jordan Daniels in 2008. This is her first career award.
Baylor Football spring practice is off and running, with the first practice in pads occurring yesterday. 5th-year senior Kevin Palmer could be starting at center this next season, next to fellow 5th-year senior Stefan Huber, and both athletes are determined to carry on the success of Baylor's offensive line. Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk has complete confidence in junior QB Bryce Petty, calling his talents a "freak of nature" and making comparisons to Tim Tebow's collegiate success.
Baylor had 14 student-athletes honored with the 2013 Dr. Gerald Lage Award, the Big 12's highest academic honor. BU led the Big 12 in students honored, and the 75 total honorees will be publicly recognized at the Big 12 Championships.
