Though none of them may have been able to beat Tevin Reese in a footrace, a group of talented Baylor receivers will now step up to take his place in the last four games of the season. Return threats Levi Norwood and Corey Coleman, and all-around athletes Clay Fuller and Jay Lee will find themselves with more chances to be Heisman-candidate Bryce Petty's target, and though they can't replicate Reese, their own abilities mean Baylor's not likely to slow down. On the other side of the ball, top Texas Tech receiver Eric Ward has more to play for than just pride or acclaim-he has his 3-year-old son. Though Baylor is projected to win, and win big, if Saturday's match turns into a shootout, Tech has the weapons to make it a last-possession-wins game.
The no. 9 Lady Bears ran past Nicholls State 111-58 in their second game of the season, behind the offensive explosion of freshman Nina Davis, who scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in her first collegiate start. Odyssey Sims was second in scoring with 23 points, while Niya Johnson led the team in assists with 8. The Lady Bears host Rice next Monday in the Ferrell Center at 7 p.m.
Volleyball picked up their fourth Big 12 win with a sweep of Texas Tech Wednesday night, defeating the Red Raiders 25-21, 25-19, 25-22. Zoe Adom and Adrien Richburg led the team in kills with 11 apiece.
Baylor will host the NCAA South Central Regional Cross Country Championships at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course today, beginning at 10 a.m. with the men's 10,000 meter race, followed by the women's 6,000 meter race at 11:15 a.m. Top Baylor runner Rachel Johnson will represent the Bears this morning, running for more than the popsicle sticks that were her prizes as a child.
