Brady Heslip Shines in Venezuela

The Canadian National Team is playing well in the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship, and Baylor gunslinger Brady Heslip is a large part of that success.

USA TODAY Sports

If your Twitter consumption borders on maniacal like mine, it has been pretty hard to miss headlines and mentions of Brady Heslip over the past two weeks or so.

The FIBA Americas Championship, held in Caracas, Venezuela is the qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Players headlining the tournament include Cory Joseph, Renaldo Balkman, Tristan Thompson, Luis Scola, Carlos Arroyo, JJ Barea, and Gustavo Ayon. Granted this isn't the elite of the elite (the Eurobasket tournament has more NBA star power), but definitely quality NBA talent. This tournament is no joke, especially for a college player.

The Canadian team is a combined 6-2 through two rounds, and 3Goggles is just slinging it.

Brady is scoring well off the bench, most recently pouring in a game high 21 in a win against Mexico.

His overall statline for the tournament:

Games Min 2 pt FGs -M/A % 3 pt FGs- M/A % FTs- M/A % Pts Avg Rebs Avg T/O Avg
2013
FIBA Americas Championship for Men
5 100 5/15 33.3 10/23 43.5 7/9 77.8 47 9.4 9 1.8 3 0.6

4 95 7/18 38.9 8/22 36.4 2/2 100.0 40 10.0 8 2.0 3 0.8

I still worry about Big XII defenses that will throw athleticism at Brady, but scoring in this environment can't be a bad thing.

Canada (3-1) is currently in second place behind Puerto Rico (4-0) and look like a lock to be in the top 4 and qualify for the 2014 FIBA tournament in Spain. The remaining three games (below) can be seen on http://www.livebasketball.tv/.
