The unthinkable has happened as the 42-game winning streak of the Lady Bears ended tonight at the hands of the Stanford Cardinal. This loss capped off a day of revenge that saw both Baylor basketball teams suffer their first losses of the season to teams they eliminated from last year's NCAA Tournaments.
The story of the game will probably be Baylor's early loss of All-American PG Odyssey Sims to a hamstring injury. Sims left the game early in the first half and did not return, and her absence showed in Baylor's play throughout the game. Without Sims as a scoring threat, Stanford was able to double and even triple-team Griner repeatedly, limiting her to "only" 22 points. Baylor was almost completely unable to score in crunch time of the game without someone to relieve the pressure on Griner, and Stanford pulled out the victory. Baylor had the look it wanted when it inbounded the ball down only 2 with 4.2 seconds left, but Griner's shot clanked off the side of the rim and the game ended.
This was an extremely disappointing day for Baylor Basketball, but even more so for the Lady Bears, who lost their first game in over a year along with any chance of repeating their undefeated record set last season. The Lady Bears will have to overcome the loss, regroup, and hope to retain their #1 ranking after this weekend's tournament.
