12/12/2016 Recruiting Update: The Dead Period Cometh

The Dead Period is upon us but don’t expect that to stop the offer spree of Baylor’s new staff.

NCAA Football: West Virginia at Baylor Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s get this out of the way: beginning early this morning at 12:01, the Football Bowl Subdivision entered what is called a “Dead Period” through January 11, 2017. Before you freak out, though, know that “Dead Period” is a complete misnomer of a term — though in-person contact is forbidden between coaches/recruiters and recruits or their families, contact is still allowed by phone or other electronic means. That includes texting, emails, snapchats (I assume?), smoke signals (again, I assume?) and the like. So don’t expect for Baylor to hang it up on recruiting for a month. I would expect the opposite, in fact.

Two days ago, I put up a post of the four most recent Baylor offers (at that time), including the first in-state offer of the new regime. Today, we’re going to talk about the next three:

OT Kadeem Telfort — 4* — Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL) — Florida Commit

As you can see, the 4* Florida commit reported his offer yesterday via Twitter and seemed quite happy about it. Also, and this is more noteworthy than it should be, he used the correct “Baylor University” rather than the incorrect “University of Baylor” that seems to be all the rage these days. No word on if Telfort will take a visit to Waco at any point or not.

QB Tyler Lytle — 3* — Servite HS (Anaheim, CA) — Colorado Commit

Your eyes aren’t fooling you, Tyler Lytle’s first and last names ARE very nearly ANAGRAMS. That doesn’t really mean anything in recruiting, but it’s interesting (at least to me). Lytle is committed to Colorado, had an offer from Temple, and now has an offer from Texas. He won’t be the last QB we offer; I guarantee you that.

S Thabo Mwaniki — 3* — Denton Guyer (Denton, TX) — OK State Commit

Now THIS is something that might actually get us somewhere. Thabo is a 3* safety recruit from Denton whose star is rising inside and outside the state, and that Baylor apparently made contact with today. This could be one to watch.

As I said before, this is almost certainly just the beginning. As our coaches continue to watch film, review transcripts, and contract recruits (legally, of course), we should see many more. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was several per day, at least for the next few days. We’ll do our best to keep you informed, as always.
