Baylor Football Recruiting Notes: August 2013

After another successful month of recruiting, the Baylor Bears are nearly full going into the first month of the 2013 season. Where do we go from here? I'm glad you asked.

USA TODAY Sports

We're now into August 2013, in a position we thought we'd never be, with 21* commits for the 2014 class and few spots remaining. How Baylor uses those spots going forward will be extremely interesting to see.

*Stick with me on this for a second

Remaining Needs (I think): QB, maybe RB, CB, S

Short Primer on Grayshirting from the July Review thread:

Grayshirting is not the same thing as graduating early. They’re similar in what they want to do, opposite in how they do it. Graduating early lets you get a semester of extra time with the team before your eligibility clock starts, so guys like Chris Johnson have already been through a spring practice and offseason before their freshman year. Grayshirting delays official enrollment, and the player pays their own way their first semester (the fall of what would have been their freshman year), so their eligibility clock doesn’t start until a year after it normally would have. Bryce Petty did that before redshirting, so we have one extra year. To describe it a little more clearly, using Greg Roberts as the player.

May 2014: Greg Roberts graduates high school.
August 2014: Roberts enrolls at Baylor, paying his own way.
January 2015: Roberts goes on scholarship.
August 2015: Roberts’ freshman year of eligibility begins.

UPDATES:

I received zero complaints in July about the format, so that's good. If there's something you'd like to see here that isn't here, please let me know.

2014 Recruiting:

S John Bonney (8/30): COULD DECIDE AT ANY MOMENT.

QB Randall Cunningham, II (8/26):

RB Terence Williams (8/18): Also visited Baylor yesterday, and things are looking very good for keeping this commitment.

CB Tim Hill (8/18): Baylor is coming on strong for this JUCO CB. I wondered in my CB Preview why we weren't at least looking at JUCO options for this position, and it seems now we are.

CB Matthew Boateng (8/15): Seems pretty clear that we want another CB/S in this class, at least. Boateng is a little-known Florida CB who apparently moved from Canada some time in the last year. I'll see if I can't find out more information.

CB Trai Mosley (8/12): Nebraska commit. Brian Ethridge Crystal Ball'd him to us tonight. He may be a candidate for the Wish List soon.

WR K.D. Cannon (8/10): Committed to Baylor at Meet the Bears. I saw him just before and just after the commit, though I didn't know it at the time. He was pumped.

CB Chad Adams (8/8): Reportedly decommitted for ASU a few minutes ago to be with LB Christian Sam.

CB John Plattenburg (8/1): Visiting UCLA this weekend. I believe they may be the team to beat at this point.

CB Nick Watkins (8/1): Looks like we're out for the 4* recruit.

2015 Recruiting:

RB JaMycal Hasty (8/19): Colt Barber has an update on BearsTruth about JaMycal. It is extremely positive. If we could team Hasty up with Gray in our 2015 class, you strike up the band.

RB Tyreik Gray (8/12): Named Baylor his leader tonight.

OL Ronnie Major (8/8): Possibly the greatest name ever for an offensive lineman. He committed to Baylor tonight after being offered on 8/2. He reportedly tore it up at our camps this summer.
