I'll kick things off this morning with an apology for not having this news up more quickly; I'm doing a few home improvement projects that are taking more time than I anticipated, as they tend to do.
T'Kevian is the name I teased for weeks in the May Recruiting Thread because he teased his own commitment for weeks. Baylor has long been the leader for the 4* OLB/S, he just needed to feel comfortable enough to make the call. Last night, at our camp in Dallas, that apparently happened. As #228 in 247Sports Top247, he is the third-highest ranked commitment in our class so far. Rivals has him ranked similarly at #227 in the country, while ESPN puts him at #44 in our region, whatever that means. ESPN also says that his strengths are in zone coverage, run support, and his instincts, whatever that means. I believe the plan is for him to eventually play either safety or nickelback (the spot in our defense popularized by Ahmad Dixon). He would seem at the outset to be somewhat redundant with Cordell Dorsey, but my guess is that Dorsey eventually ends up at OLB, while Rockwell's speed keeps him in the secondary.
With 15 commitments in the 2014 class, Baylor is now #11 in the 247Sports Team Rankings, easily our highest spot ever. Aside from the commit itself, we're also benefiting on this one from a grade higher than our average, so he's pulling things up slightly. If we could pull another highly-ranked commit this weekend, it's entirely plausible we jump into the top 10 in the country. In fact, I'd expect it (both the commit and the jump) at this point.
Unfortunately, T'Kevian's HUDL highlights are set on private, so we might have to wait a bit to get a really good look at his film. I guess I can take the unanimous view of the recruiting services that we're getting a 4* defensive talent as true.
Welcome, T'Kevian! With a name like that,it's no wonder you made SB Nation's All-Name team for 2014 recruiting!
