Baylor Football Recruiting Notes: April 2013

There seems to be quite a bit going on in the world of recruiting at the moment, so I figured I'd make a thread to compile everything and keep it updated throughout the month. We've done this before and things worked well.

Rob Christy-US PRESSWIRE

2014 Recruiting:

DT Cedric Johnson: Holds a Baylor offer, apparently has us in his top three at this moment (I don't have an insider sub anymore). It's a down year for big uglies on both sides in the state, so this would be a great get if we could swing it.

TE Anthony Jones: From Edna Karr HS in New Orleans. Probably going to be a LSU Tiger, so not worth getting excited about from our end.

OL Jovan Pruitt: Holds offers now from Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Baylor, and now Florida, as well. USC is reportedly going to offer soon. In a relatively down year for OL in the state, this one would be huge.

RB Terence Williams: After decommitting earlier in the week amidst concern that he moved too quickly, Ennis RB Terence Williams rejoined Baylor's class tonight according to BearsTruth.com and SicEmSports.com. That's great news for Baylor's 2014 class.

WR Armanti Foreman: Baylor offered Foreman, a former OU commitment, last week, and may offer his brother, D'Onta Foreman, at either RB or LB. They are presumed to be a package deal.

UPDATE: Williams rejoining Baylor's class means we may not take another RB, particularly a bigger RB, in this class. If we want to offer D'Onta, we will have to do it as a LB. We may not want to scare off K.D. Cannon by taking another highly-ranked WR, but it shouldn't, if we did. Baylor has proven there are more than enough touches to go around in our offense.

QB Randall Cunningham, Jr.: Baylor Rivals spoke with his father, the inestimable Randall Cunningham, Sr., wherein the elder RC said that Baylor and Syracuse lead for his son's services. Definitely worth reading if you have a subscription.

UPDATE: RC2 will visit this summer, probably for one of Baylor's QB camps. His dad is very interested to see how Baylor coaches QBs in-person.

UPDATE 2: Baylor coaches Phil Montgomery and Kendal Briles were in Las Vegas recently to see RC2 and offer two of his teammates: 2014 4* OT Nick Gates, who holds an Alabama offer, and 2015 TE Aliz'e Jones. Baylor is making its presence known in Sin City.

QB Brandon Harris: Baylor offered Brandon Harris last week, as well. Harris, a 4* dual-threat QB from Bossier City, Louisiana, is the third QB Baylor has offered for the 2014 class behind Randall Cunningham, Jr. and Jerrod Heard. That should tell you something both about our selectivity in this class and how much we like this kid to offer. Baylor Rivals followed up with Harris and got a few great quotes about what this offer means to him (spoiler: he likes it a lot).

OT Michael Grimm: Honestly, I don't know how Baylor even found this kid (6'7", 315-pound OT) all the way in freaking Pennsylvania, but we did and we offered. And it should show you something about the increased national scope of our recruiting this year. By my count, Baylor has about 50 offers out right now for the 2014 class, a very small number for us at this time of the year. Only 38, according to 247Sports, are from Texas. That's 76%. It may not seem like much to say we're giving 24% of our offers to kids outside of Texas, but it's more than in any year that I can find since Briles got here.

DB Jyaz Jones: Jyaz Jones is a 4* safety from South Oak Cliff in Dallas that visited for Baylor's Junior Day on February 2nd. He's also now Baylor's latest offer in the secondary for 2014.

JUCO OT Jermaine Eluemunor: Received a Baylor offer last week with his teammate Jarell Broxton, a guard. Supposedly Baylor has a better shot than you'd think for Eluemunor, who is no less than the best offensive tackle in the country from the JUCO ranks and probably the best JUCO overall. He would come in and play immediately.

2015 Recruiting:

QB Blake Lynch: This is the one I'm most excited about recently, if that makes sense. A few days ago, we started hearing on the subscription boards that Lynch had contacted our coaches and was interested in Baylor. The dual-threat QB from Troup, Texas is reportedly close to an offer from both Mississippi State and Alabama, among others, but he wanted to hear from Baylor. He did tonight.

UPDATE: Briles is taking care of this one personally, it seems.

It's worth noting that coaches still aren't allowed to directly contact 2015 kids yet. Blake called the Baylor coaching staff, who told him to call Art Briles' personal number, and he did. Texas Tech is coming by his school today, apparently.

This could be one to watch going forward. I suspect Baylor will bring him to a QB camp in the summer and offer him then, if they don't do it before that. I'll try to catch a few of his games this season since he's out here in my neck of the woods, just so we can get a better view of what we might be dealing with.

QB/WR Chad President: After the Bears moved in hard on the Temple QB last week, he committed yesterday, becoming the first member of Baylor's 2015 class.

QB Jarrett Stidham:

That offer came in on 4/29, the same day President committed. ESPN interviewed Stidham, someone Briles has been on for quite some time, and he reported that President's commitment could affect his recruitment but that nothing was certain at this moment. Still very interested in Baylor.

WR Damarkus Lodge: Lodge has a legitimate chance to be next year's KD Cannon or Robbie Rhodes, i.e. the best receiver in the state. With spring practices on high school campuses ongoing throughout the state and our own practices having concluded, our staff is everywhere. That's why you're seeing the sudden uptick in 2015 offers.

2016 Recruiting

Kameron Martin is a 2016 (yes, he's a freshman now) RB from Port Arthur Memorial HS here in Texas that is already getting looks from Texas A&M, LSU, Texas Tech, and, according to Martin, Alabama. He's visited Baylor twice before, including for the Spring Game two weeks ago, and has told me personally that he's very interested in a Baylor offer. Now he will apparently get one sometime soon.

I'll clean this up a bit later and, of course, update as we go.
