The yardage totals and final score will make this game look like a dominant offensive effort from the Baylor Bears. It was. But it was also an impressive defensive performance, with the less-known side of Baylor's team scoring 14 points of their own in the first half when the game was still in question and holding ULM to less than 15 otal yards in the second half. The Warhawks ended with just 293 for the entire game, despite running 81 plays, far less production than even the most optimistic among us expected.
We've got 2 agonizing weeks between now and the next Baylor game, so we'll have plenty of time to talk about these first three games, the first time since 1930 (according to ESPN) that a FBS team scored 60+ 3 times in a row to start a season. What I hope doesn't go unmentioned is the tremendous strides our defense seems to have taken, especially against the rush. Today, without either of our starting defensive tackles, we were able to hold ULM to only 73 yards rushing on 35 attempts. That's a virtuoso performance.
Baylor now has 209 points through the first three games of this season. In 2007, we had 218 for the entire year. In 2004, 224. 2003, 191. You get the point. If Baylor had wanted to score 100 today, it could have. Easily.
