Meet the Press: Baylor vs. TCU

Notes and quotes from the Monday press conference for Baylor vs. TCU.

Rob Christy-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire posted quotes and video from the weekly press conference today for Baylor's sixth game of the 2012 season. The two schools meeting on Saturday evening have done so scores of times before, often as members of the same conference, but never as co-members of the Big XII. That changed last season when A&M defected to the SEC and the conference went looking for replacements and gave the Frogs the invitation they were looking for. We didn't see this coming one short year ago, but I'm happy to see it. TCU belonged in this conference.

Just a few of the quotes:

Head Coach Art Briles

On the off week improving team health...
"I think it will help us get back a couple players, one that didn't finish the game and the other that missed the game, so, from that standpoint, there's no doubt it helped. The thing about an off week is that your timing and tempo tend to slow down, so we're going to make an effort to get in the game quickly on Saturday and avoid any lag from the off week."

Hear that? That's good injury news, and if you know the context clues you could probably figure out who he's talking about. But in case you didn't, he elaborated:

On injury status of Ahmad Dixon, Mike Hicks, & Demetri Goodson...
"Ahmad and Mike will both play this weekend. We might try to get an extra year out of Demetri, so he will probably not play again this year."

That is the news I wanted to hear most of all. Dixon is evidently healthy enough after his concussion that he will play the game, but perhaps even more important, we'll get one of our starting safeties back in Hicks. I never thought I'd be so glad to hear that Mike Hicks would play in a game! On the other end of the spectrum is the confirmation that Goodson will miss the rest of the season. Normally, because he played in 4 games, a medical redshirt would be impossible. With the time he missed last season taken into consideration, however, I could see it happening.

On the difference between two bye weeks...
"The first week was a little bit different because we played on a Sunday night, so we had one less day to prepare, whereas this time we played on a Saturday morning, so we had a regular Sunday. The West Virginia game is over with. It's done. We're not going to spend time worrying about it. We know what we need to improve on, we know where we need to go, and we know what we need to do to get there. Now, it's our job to go do it."

Pretty sure he's talking about the defense. Rewatch the game and look at Briles' face after some of the defensive plays. I highly doubt it's entirely "done."

Senior Quarterback Nick Florence

On being #1 in total offense...
"We put up a lot of points against West Virginia, but we didn't win. We probably left more points on the table so there is definitely things we can work on as an offense and we'll continue to get better and work things out."

He's right that they left points on the table in the third quarter. That's where we lost the game, in all truthfulness, and we could have performed better. They raced out to a 21-point lead in part because we couldn't answer. Perfection is obviously unattainable and shouldn't be expected from the fanbase, but it sounds like the team expects it.

Junior Safety/Linebacker Sam Holl

He's just a junior? Now I'm depressed.

Senior Wide Receiver Lanear Sampson

On TCU defense...
"TCU is a very good football team. They have a few people that came back from last year's team and they are still a pretty good defensive team. Nothing's changed with their defense."

Let's hope so!
