You’re not going to believe this, but Baylor lost a football game today where we didn’t look outmatched, never gave up, had a ton of important players get injured, shot ourselves in the foot a few times in the redzone, and tried to mount a late rally and failed. And along the way, there were a couple of weird penalties (Xavier Newman was engaged in a block on that rollout to Blake Lynch) that contributed to failed drives and probably shouldn’t have been called, plus we gave up a long TD where the Safety That Shall Not Be Named could have made a play and didn’t. I know, you’re shocked. I almost didn’t believe it myself.
And as I wrote that paragraph, we just punted with the ball inside the 40 so Iowa State could get it back and feed Montgomery. Now, less than three minutes later, they have the ball inside our 30. I hate everything.
When this season is officially over, we’ll probably have one win to show for all of this. I’ll also have a ton of questions. Why would you ever punt inside the opponent’s 40? What happened to the diamond formation that ripped up West Virginia? If you think Blake Lynch is your safety of the future, why didn’t we see him play a single play at safety? Did someone hypnotize our players into believing that the endzone is lava? If so, who? Have you checked whether any of you were cursed by a witch-doctor? I’m sure you don’t think so, but have you checked? What about an evil genie that took “Let us get that first win” too literally? Look, I’m just spitballing here; you guys know better than I do what might have happened.
If you could do it over again, would you still have started Solomon? (I think the answer is yes). After that, did you secretly want to play Charlie Brewer the entire time? Don’t answer that one, actually, but blink twice if Davion Hall has compromising pictures of one of the coaches. Did you ever consider that you might lose to Liberty? If so, why? Even considering that we did lose to Liberty, you probably shouldn’t have ever thought we might lose to Liberty.
Anyway, I could keep going with other questions about why we couldn’t generate more of a pass rush, if Terence Williams is even alive at this point, or if there’s anything you’d do differently in recruiting for this season. I know they only had about a week before the JUCO signing day in December, but not scouring the JUCO/transfer ranks for immediate OL/DB help in the summer is a bit puzzling. At the end of the day, though, we are where we are. All we can do is keep moving forward and hoping for better days, and if you want to view things positively, there’s certainly enough room for that with the way that guys like Brewer, Hasty, Lovett, Mims, Arnold, etc. keep learning and growing. There’s nowhere to go but up, right?
I guess we’ll see.
