On the heels of today’s announcement confirming the hire of our new DL coach Dennis Johnson, Baylor has also confirmed earlier reports that we have a new passing-game coordinator and WR coach in Jorge Munoz, who, like Johnson, was also an analyst at LSU before joining our staff. Munoz was the OC and then wide-receivers coach at ULaLa before joining LSU’s offensive staff in 2018 and helping mentor Heisman-trophy winning QB Joe Burrows the last two season. Munoz interviewed for the Oregon OC job earlier this offseason and was rumored to be in the running for the LSU co-OC job vacated by Joe Brady (stolen by Matt Rhule for the Carolina Panthers) and is very highly regarded for his work at LSU and elsewhere. I would guess that regardless our eventual OC hire, Munoz will have a large role to play in shaping our offense under first-year HC Dave Aranda.

For more information on Munoz based on segments David Smoak of ESPN 1660 did when reports about him joining the staff first started gaining steam yesterday, check out this thread. In an article from The Advocate, LSU’s Ensminger had this to say about him: “While we’re game-planning on Monday and Tuesday and setting up our first- and second-down game plan, Jorge is kind of setting up our blitz package on first and second down that we can send to Joe (Burrow),” Ensminger said. “On Tuesday, he’ll put together our third-down blitz package to present to Joe. The stuff he stays ahead of for me and Brady is outstanding.” He also called Munoz the “MVP” of his coaching room.
With Munoz and Johnson now officially in the fold, Baylor’s coaching staff looks something like this:
HC: Dave Aranda (@CoachDaveAranda)
AHC: Joey McGuire (@CoachMcGuire_BU)
DC: Ron Roberts (@CoachRonRoberts)
DL: Meatball Johnson (@CoachDJ_)
PCG/WR: Jorge Munoz (@CoachMunoz13)
Unknown: Shawn Bell (@CoachShawnBell)
We still need an offensive coordinator, who is likely to also be responsible for working with QBs, RB coach (which I would have predicted would be Jeff Nixon from the prior staff since he’s been recruiting pretty steadily for the last week before he was removed from the website today), and OL coach, as well as a LBs coach (Ronnie Wheat was rumored to be taking this job) and someone to coach in the secondary (Alabama CB coach Karl Scott was rumored here earlier this week, but not much has been heard since then). I anticipate we’ll hear more about those hires in the coming days, but there’s no way to know.
Welcome to Baylor, Coach Munoz!
