Baylor Pulls Away from Texas Southern 72-59, Freeman Scores 21

Texas Southern closed the gap to a 33-32 score with 2:17 left in the first, but Baylor's 10-0 run in the middle of the second half put the game out of reach.

Four Baylor Bears scored in double figures, led by Al Freeman's 21. Freeman showed his versatile scoring abilities on the catch-and-shoot from three and dribble-driving to the rim. He finished shooting 4-8 from three and 8-17 from the field. Terry Maston and Lester Medford each had 12 points. Medford did his damaged from deep, shooting 4-5 from three, while Maston shot 4-6 from the field with an array of left- and right-handed jump hooks and turnaround jumpers. He finished 4-4 from the line in his most impressive game of the season.

Malcolm Riley led Texaxs Southern in scoring with 18 points, 15 of which came in the 1st half. The Tigers shot 4-10 from three and found the soft spots in the zone in the first half, but Scott Drew's adjustments at halftime closed off the easy passes inside to cutters and stymied the Tigers' offense.

Rico Gathers was Baylor's 4th player to score in double digits with 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds, his 6th double-double of the season.

Taurean Prince had a down game to follow his scoring frenzy in the previous game. He tallied just 8 points on 3-13 shooting, although he also collected 6 rebounds and handed out 5 assists, several of which led to 3-point shots for his teammates.

Ish Wainright didn't score after his early three, but he recorded 7 rebounds and 5 assists to fill in where he was needed.

King McClure, who has had a tough shooting stretch recently, hit the only three he attempted. He also finished the game with a block.

Johnathan Motley and Jake Lindsey were oddly quiet in today's game, neither earning many minutes. Each of them did, however, record 2 assists in limited time.

Baylor's offense in the 2nd half was a bit discombobulated, even in the midst of the 10-0 run. Shotmaking and stout defense allowed Baylor to pull away in the 2nd half despite that.

Baylor's next game will be its Big XII conference opener on January 2nd in Lawrence against the Kansas Jayhawks.
