The baseball season is now in full stride as both the major league and minor league seasons opened this week. I thought it might be fun to take a look at some former Baylor baseball players who are actively playing pro ball.
NOTE: If you find any other former Bears that are currently playing, please let me know so I can add them to this. Thanks!
MAJOR LEAGUES
David Murphy, OF
Cleveland Indians
ML Debut: 9/2/2006
Baylor: 2001-2003
Murphy begins his second season with the Indians as a fourth outfielder that will mainly be counted on against right handed pitching. Known most for his seven year tenure with the Rangers, Murphy is not quite the power threat that he once was but will still probably find close to 400 ABs for what should be a competitive Indians team. Murphy can probably be considered the best hitter to ever come out of Baylor as he has more major league hits, runs, home runs, and RBIs than any other former Baylor player.
Shawn Tolleson, RHP
Texas Rangers
ML Debut: 6/7/2012
Baylor: 2008-2010
Twitter: Follow @ShawnTolleson38
Tolleson returns for his second season in the Rangers' bullpen after coming over from the Dodgers in the 2013 offseason. Tolleson had a breakout season in 2014, his first full season in the big leagues, going 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA in 71.2 innings of work. He figures to play a key role for Texas this season in the late innings to hand the ball to closer Neftali Feliz, as evidenced by his work in the 8th inning in the Rangers' 3-1 win over Oakland on Tuesday night.
Logan Verrett, RHP
Texas Rangers
ML Debut: 4/8/2015
Baylor: 2009-2011
Twitter: Follow @lverrett4
Verrett joins Tolleson in the Rangers bullpen as a long relief option for Texas. Verrett spent Spring Training with the Orioles as a Rule 5 selection but was waived when he did not make Baltimore's 25 man roster. The Rangers picked him up off waivers last week and must keep him on the major league roster for the entire 2015 season or he will be returned to his original organization, the New York Mets. Logan made his Major League debut on Wednesday night in the Rangers' 10-0 loss to the A's, pitching 2.2 innings of long relief and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.
