Dave Aranda and the Baylor football staff have been on a major hot-streak lately picking up 3 commits this past weekend and now picking up 2 more over the past few days. As we all know, it was a rough first year during a pandemic year for the new coaching staff, so for them to build this kind of momentum on the recruiting trail in spite of that is a huge testament to Aranda, his staff, and their ability to connect with guys. It is reminscent of Rhule’s 2018 class which was maybe the best Baylor has ever taken and it came after a 1 win season. A huge shoutout to the current players as well, because recruits often are “sold” by the guys are who already there. You can’t fake genuine.
A Big Time OL
The first big pickup was OL George Maile, a highly recruited OL from Utah. OL Coach Eric Mateos was plugged in with him back when Mateos was at BYU and that relationship carried over to Baylor. Furthermore, Maile was hosted by DL Siaki Ika who is a legend back in his home state of Utah.
Maile a quick-footed big guy with a great frame to play either right tackle or guard. He’s naturally very powerful, but what matters most are his quick feet which allow him to use that power to his maximum advantage. I think because his feet are so quick, he’ll start out at tackle and then they’ll move him inside if it doesn’t work out.
Maile was a big time target for both USC and Oregon. For Baylor to beat out those two schools for a guy from Utah is a huge testament to the staff.
An Incredible Start to 2023
The previous two guys were both 2022 guys that will be signing early next year. The next commit was from a rising high school sophomore, Isaiah Crawford, nephew of former Baylor LB Billy Crawford. Isaiah is from a small town, Post, TX. His highlights are simply incredible for someone his level. And he clearly is a guy who only projects to get better (sometimes big fat guys can dominate as young guys but then don’t improve much — Crawford is a hyper athletic guy who will only get better as he packs on another 40 lbs over the years).
Crawford is an elite, elite recruit. He’s as good as 2022 recruit Kaian Roberts-Day. He’ll be a 6’4 250 lb JACK who has a clear path to the NFL. It is truly incredible that Baylor was able to get a guy like him in the fold so early. He’s a clear top 100 national recruit and probably top 50.
Hard to overstate how big this is for Baylor. Crawford is a top 100 national recruit, probably higher. With Roberts-Day playing TE, Crawford becomes the type of elite JACK that is a near surefire NFL guy. https://t.co/7AsjI1VENo— Travis (@Travis_Roeder) June 23, 2021
