Late February MBB Thoughts

NCAA Basketball: Baylor at Texas Austin American Statesman-USA TODAY NETWORK

Right on cue, college basketball is starting to get really fun again. Of course part of that is because the #2 ranked Bears are finally back in action, but a lot of it is because there have been some fantastic games lately.

1.) I’ve enjoyed watching the Big 10 play ball this year. The Michigan vs. Ohio State game was as good of a game as I’ve seen all year long. And in particular, it’s been fun to watch the elite Big 10 bigs playing the center position. I think it’s fair to say that the Big 12 lacking in that department. Guys like Luka Garza, Hunter Dickinson, and Trayce Jackson-Davis are at a different caliber than the big men in our conference.

2.) This upcoming weekend of games may be the best of the regular season. I’ll highlight a few of them. Before Baylor takes on a hot Kansas squad in prime-time, the afternoon games should offer a lot of entertainment. First, we get the rematch of Texas & Texas Tech at 11:00 AM, followed by Illinois v. Wisconsin at 1:00 PM. Both games should interest Baylor fans for various reasons. Later on college basketball fans will get to watch Duke and Louisville battle for an at-large March Madness opportunity. Finally, on Sunday you get arguably the sports best player (Luka Garza) going up against potential #1 seed Ohio State.

3.) I’m okay with college basketball players, coaches, and analysts watching Baylor struggle with the Cyclones. Scott Drew’s teams have traditionally performed well when they have a chip on their shoulder. And right now the Michigan Wolverines seem to be the flavor of the week to the media. If that helps the team refocus then I’m all for it. Baylor is set to play four straight games against tournament teams and it won’t be an easy way to end the regular season.
