The College Football Playoff Committee revealed its initial rankings, and Baylor ranks No. 12. That is fine with me. The Bears have time to improve the resume.
BYU is ranked 15. The Cougars are No. 17 in the AP Poll.
Oklahoma State is 11.
Mississippi State is No. 17 despite not being ranked by the AP.
Surprisingly Oklahoma is No. 8. The Sooners are No. 4 in the AP. But Oklahoma has zero good wins, and has played a host of close games. I’m fine with that.
George is No. 1. Great.
Alabama is No. 2. That’s an embarrassment. The Committee moved Mississippi State into the rankings, but justifying Alabama’s ranking—even thinking the Tide are great—is way too soon.
Michigan State and Oregon came in at No. 3 and No. 4. I have no issue with Michigan State.
Cincinnati is No. 6 behind Oregon and Ohio State. Cincinnati's win over Notre Dame is better than Ohio State’s top win (Minnesota). Ohio State has a single top 25 win. Barely beating Penn State doesn’t overwhelm Cincinnati. If we want to have recruiting rankings determine the title, then let’s just simulate the season.
I would refuse to stay on the Committee if I were a member. Cincinnati has been hosed. They beat Notre Dame at Notre Dame by double digits. It doesn’t matter. Ohio State will always get the benefit of the doubt. We all remember 2014.
