In what was probably the strangest game of the entire season, Baylor goes down to West Virginia 76-64. The first half saw the Bears jump out to a quick 9-0 lead only to have the Mountaineers go on a 19-2 run. Unfortunately, the Bears witnessed a series of events that haven’t been seen the whole season. In a span just a few minutes, the Bears saw two players (Mayer & Bandoo) get injured on the same play, saw Jared Butler miss a wide-open uncontested layup, and due to foul trouble had to play both Flo Thamba and Freddie Gillespie at the same time. Despite the rough turn of events, Baylor only trailed by 2 at the half.
Both teams traded punches early in the 2nd half, but ultimately it was foul trouble that was too much to overcome for the Bears. Freddie Gillespie picked up an ill-advised 4th foul and Flo Thamba fouled out not long after that. The foul trouble and lack of depth due to Matthew Mayer being injured let the game get out of hand. The game became easier for West Virginia and they never looked back.
It’s hard to be upset at Baylor. They fought hard throughout the ballgame, but it just wasn’t meant to be today. Now, Baylor will wait to see who they face in the Big 12 tournament which will start on Wednesday.
