Pete Thamel and Football Scoop Report Baylor’s Targeting Justin Fuente of Virginia Tech

NCAA Football: Virginia Tech at Virginia Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

While I have nothing to report on this, Pete Thamel—a well sourced man at Yahoo—tweeted this out:

Fuente is the current head coach at Virginia Tech. He went 10-4, 9-4, 6-7 and 8-5 in the last four seasons, respectively. At Memphis, he went 3-9, 10-3 and 9-3.

Fuente is apparently hiring staff at Virginia Tech, so maybe this is a leak on his side and a way to try and get a raise. But some Virginia Tech fans aren’t worked up he’d leave.

Football Scoop reported that a Baylor hire feels immediate. They said Fuente is a candidate—but pointed out he’s hiring staff, which could be a problem if he’s really looking to leave. They added this:

In addition to Fuente, sources tell FootballScoop Billy Napier interviewed today and Mack Rhoades was interested in speaking with LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda as well. Arkansas State head coach Blake Anderson and current Baylor assistant Joey McGuire are also believed to be candidates.

I’d prefer Baylor hire Joey McGuire. I think Fuente is very risky, and he hasn’t done that well the last three years. But he has recruited well, and maybe he could land top 15 classes and compete for Big 12 titles at Baylor; I’m just worried he’s a consistent 8-4 coach, and I don’t want Baylor to be Texas A&M.

Hopefully we get an answer soon.
