The Big 12 released their awards, and four Bears were honored.
Makai Mason made All-Big 12 Second Team. His 40 points and 9-of-12 shooting from three powered Baylor to a dominant win over TCU. If he’d stayed healthy, he had a strong shot to make the first team.
Mark Vital was given honorable mention and made the defensive team. He frequently battled much taller players. The 6-foot-5 Vital played a ton of center. He’s also one of the nation’s best rebounders.
Jared Butler was named to the freshman team and earned honorable mention status. Butler arrived at Baylor in August. He just scored 31 points in Allen Fieldhouse.
Mario Kegler received honorable mention status too. He scored 47 combined points in back-to-back games against West Virginia and Texas.
Chris Beard was named Big 12 Coach of the Year. The Red Raiders were co-champions, after being picked seventh in the preseason. While I would have voted for Scott Drew, Beard was a very worthy winner.
Jarrett Culver was Big 12 Player of the Year. The soon to be lottery pick was an easy selection for the award.
