The Big 12 released their All-Big 12 basketball selections, and Tristan Clark was selected for the first team. Clark is Baylor’s first preseason selection since Johnathan Motley in 2016-2017.
Joining Clark on the first team were Udoka Azubuike (Kansas and the preseason selection for player of the year), Devon Dotson (Kansas), Tyrese Haliburton (Iowa State) and Desmond Bane (TCU).
Clark was Baylor’s best player until he injured his knee against Iowa State in early January. The junior led the nation in field goal percentage at the time of his injury. Bart Torvik’s preseason projections have him and Dotson as the Big 12’s two best players.
Surprisingly, Jared Butler was not named honorable mention. I profiled Butler this summer, and he seems primed for a big season. CJ Moore of the Athletic noted he would have selected him to the first team as well.
The coaches will release their team rankings soon. I expect Baylor to be picked second or third. With Texas Tech losing by 10 to UTEP in an exhibition game, the Red Raiders might drop below the Bears. Texas Tech played their best players major minutes in that loss to UTEP, so don’t let the Red Raiders spin that as a justifiable loss. There’s not much of a justification for ranking Baylor any lower than second.
