Sexual Assault Scandal

OBF Note: While recent articles concerning the scathing sworn testimony of former Baylor Athletic Director Ian McCall beg the question of whether we are back to square one in regard to the Sexual Assault Scandal that has devastated Baylor and Baylor faithful, let me state unequivocally that the answer is a resounding “no.” We are not back to square one.

Please do not forget the drive and initiative that Baylor has expended to ensure that going forward, sexual and domestic assault and harassment victims at Baylor will receive the care and assistance that others have been deprived in the past. Baylor’s investment in infrastructure, staff and training to provide for the needs, rights and dignity of sexual and domestic assault and harassment victims has already tallied into the millions of dollars and will continue to be evaluated to ensure that Baylor is the standard for other universities to emulate.

While the questions might remain as to whether the culture is indeed changing and whether some are still employed or associated with Baylor who were a despicable part of the decades long atrocity, and I do hope that any and all are rooted out, please take pains to not let those questions impede in any manner the diligent efforts and progress going forward.

EDITORIAL: Baylor officials, alumni, students back to Square One on sexual assault scandal, WacoTrib, For all we’ve seen and heard of Baylor University’s forcefully implementing strict protocols to discourage sexual violence involving students, ensuring help for assault victims and changing campus culture, what we’ve seen so far of the scalding June 19 deposition from former Baylor athletics director Ian McCaw takes us straight back to Square One. The only way to put to rest festering questions about what Baylor leadership did or didn’t do in addressing a scourge of sexual assaults on its watch is sworn testimony from key regents, former Baylor leaders and members of the sullied athletic staff. Some champ at the bit to do just that.

Ex-Baylor athletic director: Black athletes made scapegoats for sexual assault problem, ChicagoTribune, The former athletic director at Baylor University alleges that regents schemed to make black football players scapegoats for a decades-long problem of sexual assault at the nation's largest Baptist school, and that he resigned rather than be part of a massive cover-up.
