Sunday Lookahead: Abilene Christian University

We’re finally nearing the home stretch, with Baylor Football coming just around the summer corner. Baylor’s first game of the season will come September 1st at home against Abilene Christian, an FCS football team. Now we all sadly know from last season that FCS teams cannot be counted as a for sure win. But ACU has hit some tough times as of late. Last season, the Wildcats went 2-9. Their only two wins were against Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word.

However, there is some reason to believe that ACU might be working towards a comeback. Head coach Adam Dorrel is entering his second season with the Wildcats, similar to Baylor’s coach Matt Rhule who is also entering his second season with the Bears.

But, there will be plenty of difficulties for Dorrel. The Wildcats only return 10 starters, five on each side of the ball. ACU lost their all time leading tackler and two strong wide receivers. Those are losses that are hard to come back from when trying to rebuild a program. However, the Wildcats do return their breakout star quarterback Luke Anthony who threw for 642 yards and seven touchdowns in only two starts near the end of the season.

All in all, the Wildcats might be able to improve from a 2-9 season the year before. Nevertheless, this should definitely be the easiest opponent of the 2018 season for the Bears, as ACU is an FCS team and a not very good one at present on top of that.
