This afternoon’s 83-54 tromping of Kansas State was the third time the Lady Bears have faced the Wildcats this season, winning all three by an average of 28 points per game.
In today’s game, the Lady Bears went up 2-0 at 16 seconds into today’s game and went on to increase that lead by an average 2.1 points for every point scored by the wildcats through the first three quarters.
The Lady Bears led by 37 points (70-33) at start the fourth quarter when Baylor Lady Bear Head Coach Kim Mulkey decided to rest her two post players, Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox for the remainder of the game. Adding insult to injury, Coach Mulkey inserted two of her team equipment managers, Michelle Kahue and Darrlyn McDonough late in the fourth quarter.
“I thought, `Isn’t this what college athletics is about,” Mulkey said. “So go write that story instead of a negative one. Two managers, probably the highlight of their life was today. You saw our kids passed up shots to get them shots. That’s the kind of bunch this team is.”
The Lady Bears played without starting point guard Kristy Wallace due to a torn ACL suffered in the regular season finale against West Virginia. Alexis Morris started in Kristy’s stead and played 38 minutes. “I think Alexis Morris is competitive enough, confident enough, good enough,” Mulkey said. “She is not afraid to fail. She is not afraid of the challenge because she has been prepared by Kristy.” Morris received an ovation from the fans as she exited the game late in the 4th.
The Lady Bears out rebounded the Wildcats 44-20, led by Kalani Brown with 13 rebounds and Didi Richards with 8 rebounds. The Lady Bear starting players averaged 6.6 rebounds each while the bench, including the equipment mangers, averaged 2.2 rebounds each. Four out of the five Baylor starters scored in double digits, led by Kalani Brown with 26 points for a double double. Dekeiya Cohen scored 19 points, Juicy Landrum scored 14 points and Lauren Cox scored 10 points. Lauren Cox blocked 4 shots.
The Lady Bears next face TCU in the Big XII Tournament semi-finals on Sunday at 2:00 PM CT. The game will be on FS1.
