Fresh off a Texas Bowl victory, here are the things I’m focused on over the next two months.
1) NFL rumors- I’m throwing this up top because it frames everything else.
Matt Rhule’s going to be mentioned on NFL job watchlists. That’s a good thing. He led Baylor to a six win improvement and is well respected in football. He’s been an NFL assistant and has connections with a few teams.
There may not be as many openings this offseason, especially if Jacksonville, Washington and Charlotte—potential job openings—elect to stay the course.
I expect Rhule to be Baylor’s coach in 2019. I am not reporting any information about him leaving or even having a renewed interest that this is the time to leave. But he’s going to appear on NFL job lists. And without much football news, people can react however they like to the NFL having an interest in Rhule.
2) New assistant- Fran Brown is now the co-defensive coordinator at Temple. That leaves Baylor with another assistant opening. Brown was a force on the recruiting trail, which makes this an important hire.
3) Any position changes- I wouldn’t expect a ton of announcements, but with the Bears’ roster getting close to finalized after the early signing period, some guys might switch spots.
4) Last of the 2019 class- Baylor will likely add three more guys to the class. By the end of February, we should know just about the full roster for next season.
