Baylor swept Miami (Ohio) 19-25, 16-25 and 21-25 this evening in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament being hosted by Baylor inside the Ferrell Center.

Miami pushed Baylor through the entirety of the match and took a substantial lead to start the 3rd set.

Yossiana Pressley led the Lady Bears with 18 points (17 kills) followed by Shelly Fanning with 14 points (11 kills) and Aniah Philo with 11 points (8 kills).

Baylor led Miami in kills, 46-28.

Jana Brusek had 19 digs for the Lady Bears, followed by Aniah Philo with 13 digs, Yossiana Pressley with 9 digs and Hannah Lockin with 7 digs.

Miami had a total of 55 digs to Baylor’s 69 digs.

“It was a battle, for sure. I’m not sure it was our sharpest or cleanest match, but the effort was there. For us, it always starts with great effort, and then we’ve got to be a little bit more technical with some of the things we’re doing. On defense, Jana, 19 digs, awesome, awesome job. She’s just been passing lights-out. So, it opened the door for us to continue to do some great things. Yossi really stepped up. Hitting her in the back row, I think, is going to be a force for us through the tournament. And then both of our middles did a good job, either killing the ball or being disruptive.” -head coach Ryan McGuyre.

Baylor Lady Bears next play the Colorado Buffs at 8:00 PM CT on Saturday inside the Ferrell Center. You can catch the action in person or via live video streaming at Baylor Bears dot com.

Colorado swept James Madison earlier tonight in the Ferrell Center, 21-25, 14-25 and 12-25.

The Buffs improve to 23-9 on the season and have now won four straight first-round matches in NCAA Tournament action dating back to 2005. The Dukes end their season with a 23-6 record.

Colorado and James Madison played the first set fairly evenly before the Buffs took control and never looked back. Setter Brynna DeLuzio got the middles involved early in the second set and that proved to be the difference in that set then Frankie Shebby took over the third set to get the sweep.

OBF Note: With Oxford, OH (location of Miami University) being just 37.5 miles from the Xavier Campus in Cincinatti, one might say that Baylor and the State of Texas exacted a modicum of revenge today for Baylor’s loss to the Xavier Musketeers Tuesday in MBB!

The Miami Campus is very beautiful. The Jeffersonian architecture coupled with the verdant greens of summer might confuse someone into thinking they are on the Baylor Campus during springtime. The poet Robert Frost described Miami University as "The most beautiful campus that ever there was." Clearly Mr. Frost had at that time never visited Baylor.
