Friday DBR: Final Camp

New, comments

It's the last Baylor camp of the summer, and the coaching staff has managed to bring some huge names to campus.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Before we get to the meat of today's report, we're pleased to have gotten new information on Brady Heslip, Destroyer of Worlds' Summer NBA Spectacular.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Brady Heslip lights it up with 16 PTs on 4-5 shooting from deep. Also 0 turnovers in 26 min at the PG for Minn. Congrats Brady!</p>&mdash; Scott Drew (@BUDREW) <a href="https://twitter.com/BUDREW/statuses/489951095255347200">July 18, 2014</a></blockquote>

Heslip, as can be seen in the tweet above, put up 16 points and shot 4-5 from beyond the arc. It's not explicitly mentioned, but Heslip also shot 2-4 from inside the line and had two assists. Our boy has proven that he can make the shots. Here's to hoping he can earn enough time on the court to make an NBA roster next season, if only as a specialist. Heslip's Timberwolves eventually fell to Quincy Acy's Sacramento Kings, but both Baylor players had good showings; Acy ended with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and a thunderous block. Acy's consistent play and improvement from three point range has Kings fans buzzing. I sometimes forget that the Kings exist. In short:

CAMP TIME

It's here: the last Baylor Football camp of the summer of 2014 before the regular season starts up. Briles and Company have quite a few big names coming to Waco, especially those in the class of 2016. Most of Baylor's 2015 class will be in attendance, and will presumably work to bring new players into the fold. We got confirmation of a few more attendees last night via Twitter and BearsTruth, so here are a few highlights.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Baylor camp has so much speed coming in you&#39;d think Walter White lived on campus.</p>&mdash; Brian Ethridge (@TruthOrBear247) <a href="https://twitter.com/TruthOrBear247/statuses/489959516729901057">July 18, 2014</a></blockquote>

Yes, that's highly regarded 2015 corner Kris Boyd, who many have considered to be a strong A&M lean in the past few months. Have a great time, Kris. Baylor's a pretty cool place. This is the same guy who tweeted that Baylor rules the state a few days ago, and he'll be playing in Gilmer's secondary with Blake Lynch this season. Anything could happen.

We also have it on pretty good authority that Patrick Hudson, the No. 2 offensive tackle in the 2016 class, will be at today's camp. Hudson is currently committed to Texas A&M, but it's said to be an extremely soft one, and a lot of A&M fans who have followed his recruitment worry that if Baylor gets him on campus he'll flip. Here's to hoping.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Baylor in the morning! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/baylorbears?src=hash">#baylorbears</a> Then under the lights in Austin! #hookem#greattobeback</p>&mdash; JP Urquidez (@JP_OT2016) <a href="https://twitter.com/JP_OT2016/statuses/489808512604573696">July 17, 2014</a></blockquote>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Urquidez recently moved to Maryland. Crystal Ball favors Texas right now, but Baylor is definitely a player and recently offered one of his teammates.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Excited to see Coach Briles and the rest of the staff tomorrow </p>&mdash; Jack Anderson5⃣3⃣ (@jackyboy5454) <a href="https://twitter.com/jackyboy5454/statuses/489973013060657153">July 18, 2014</a></blockquote>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Anderson is a highly regarded offensive lineman in the class of 2017. Very early in his recruitment.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Hopefully I see my bro <a href="https://twitter.com/itsQuannn">@itsQuannn</a> tmrw at Baylor . <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Sick?src=hash">#Sick</a>&#39;Em </p>&mdash; Eno Benjamin™ (@eno_benjamin5) <a href="https://twitter.com/eno_benjamin5/statuses/489967489925652480">July 18, 2014</a></blockquote>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Benjamin is a 2017 RB out of Wylie East and knows Quan Jones- seems to be on good terms with Anderson as well.

The most unusual attendee is Will Lawrence, an offensive tackle in the class of 2018 from Germantown, Tennessee. Kid just finished eighth grade and he's camped with a dozen schools. He's already visited Baylor twice, and tomorrow will be his third time on campus. Lawrence's recruitment seems almost too far away to discuss, since he'd enroll more than a year after I graduate from Baylor, but coaches are drooling over him. After all, most eighth graders arent 6'4" and 260 pounds.

There are quite a few other names. Follow some of Baylor's recruiting analysts on twitter for updates over the course of the camp. I recommend Pagitt. We all love Pagitt.

The McLane Stadium video board lit up for the first time yesterday. It's gigantic.

Briles and Campbell had been at the bookstore greeting fans for nearly five hours when this was tweeted. Great show of support from fans and great show of love from Briles.

This image has been floating around for a while now. I have no idea what Briles reposting it means.

It's a new day, kids (I think the entire commentariat is older than me). Go get it.
