The weekend is here once again, which means that there are sports happening everywhere. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have too much sports to cover than none at all.
Baseball and Softball
Baseball's Bats Overmatched by TCU's Morrison in Loss - BaylorBears.com
It is very difficult to win when the opposing pitcher is en fuego like TCU's Preston Morrison was last night. Morrison entered the game with a 1.28 ERA and left with six strikeouts, a walk, three hits, and no runs given up. He couldn't even be cooled by all the fanning done by Baylor players.
Baylor will look to take the regular season series today at 6:30. With the loss yesterday, Baylor is now guaranteed to play TCU in the opening round of the Big 12 Championship.
Canion fans 15 in NCAA SB Opener vs. NWLSU; Baylor wins 6-1 - BaylorBears.com
Speaking of fanning...Whitney Canion struck out 15 to tie her postseason career high as the Lady Bears rolled over Northwestern State. Both Baylor and Tulsa won yesterday, which means that the sixth- and fourth-best, respectively, pitching crews in the NCAA will face off at 12:00 today. Expect very few runs.
Best of the Rest
Men's Tennis swept past No. 12 Illinois to get revenge for the Texas Bowl - again (Baylor swept the Illini earlier this year as well). Baylor is currently ranked No. 6, so they were favored to win, but asweep of a Top-15 team is mighty impressive. The other neon-wearing Bears advanced to the quarterfinals (aka the Elite Eight) of the NCAA Tennis Championships, along with UT and OU.
Baylor faces a tough draw in No. 4 Virginia, whom they fell to, 6-1 in March. The Bears haven't beaten Virginia in six tries, but if anyone is better suited to take on a "have never" situation, it is the oldest continually operating university in the great state of Texas. Baylor and Virginia will play at 11:00 tomorrow.
Track and Field are out in Lubbock for the Big 12 Championships. Yesterday was the first day of the meet and featured four All-Big 12 performances from the Bears. Senior Erin Atkinson placed second in the hammer throw for the second season in a row and has now earned three-consecutive All-Big 12 honors in the hammer throw. Javelin throwers Blake Mayberry and Richard Hansen (go engineers!) both recorded their second consecutive All-Big 12 performances. The two finished sixth and eighth, respectively. Freshman Alex Davis recorded the final All0Big 12 honor of the night with an eighth-place finish in her first-ever 10,000 meters. Full results are in the link and be sure to follow @BaylorTrack for continuing coverage of the events today.
Men's Golf sit in 11th place entering the final round of the Eugene Regional. The Bears are currently 15 strokes out of fifth place, which the cutoff to advance to the NCAA National Championships. Coach Greg Priest is optimistic that his team can overcome their poor play on Friday and have a great round today. Follow along at GolfStat.com.
