Monday DBR: As They Tear Your Hopes Apart

The Lady Bears lost a heart-breaker yesterday in a game that featured more than its fair share of questionable officiating.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Within the span of twelve hours, Waco went from a lovely 21°C to a frigid -5°C (yes, I'm using Celsius; Fahrenheit is a silly temperature system). As we left the Ferrell Center, the skies opened up and @this strange thing came down from the sky; I believe it is called sleet@. The sleet stung almost as much the loss. Elsa must have been mad at the refs for their "refereeing".

In other news, Baylor actually delayed classes! Classes are delayed until 10:10, which is more than anything Baylor students could have hoped for. The Apocalypse is nigh!

In Season: MBB, WBB, Baseball, and Softball

No. 6 WBB Falls to No. 11 West Virginia, 71-69 - BaylorBears.com

First things first, I will try to keep this as neutral as possible, but I will freely admit that I am not at all happy about the job the referees did at this game.

Odyssey Sims put up 39 points against a stoic West Virginia defense, despite going down late in the first half with a shoulder injury (THAT WASN'T EVEN CALLED A FOUL!!!). Odyssey drove the lane, attempted to cut through two Mountaineers, and fell to the ground hard. She and an 'Eer were on the floor, but the girl in blue got up quickly; Sims did not. It was painful to watch. I cringe thinking about it. You never want a player to be injured, but when it is a player who has poured her heart and soul into the team (on Senior Day, no less), it is extra painful. Thankfully, Odyssey Sims can't be slowed down by an injury and she returned for the second half.

Unfortunately, Sims also had a critical turnover. Sims was cornered by a stifling West Virginia double team who somehow managed to not foul her. Sims then attempted a pass, but it was intercepted and taken down the court for a game-wining layup. Still, I am of the opinion that the game never should have been as close as it was at the end. Baylor was the better team for most of this game, but the refs utterly killed the flow of the game at points. There was one point were the refs looked as if they were wandering about clueless for over three minutes "discussing a call". In my opinion, the level of refereeing was abhorrent for de facto Big 12 Championship Game. There's a reason the refs literally ran off  the court the second the game was finished.

Baylor still has the chance to tie for the Big 12 Championship, but losing the title outright hurts.

Baseball Drops 5-3 Decision Late to UNC Wilmington - BaylorBears.com

Welp. Yesterday was just not a good day in Baylor athletics. Baylor Baseball was, despite the rainy weather, able to get in two games yesterday. In the first game, Baylor had a 3-2 lead going into the ninth inning, but gave up three runs, falling 5-3 in the end.

In the second game, Baylor failed to score at all.

The Bears will play one more game tomorrow, against California, before returning to the Wack for a four game homestead.

Stearns 1-Hits UTSA to Help No. 12 SB to 4-1 Tourney - BaylorBears.com

Baylor Softball downs UTSA 2-1 to finish the Gulf Coast Classic with a 4-1 record. This is the exact same record Baylor had in its previous three tournaments, giving them a 16-4 record on the year.

IT'S OFFICIAL!!!

Rumour has it that a commitment is coming this morning. I'm unfortunately not a member of Bears Truth (eggs cost money!), so I did not receive the text that went out last night. However, given that I figured out the news via public Twitter posts and Mark gave me the go ahead...

The recruit, if you could tell from the Tweets, is Burton High School ATH. He is a composite 3* 6'6" - 208 Athlete, Wide Receiver, and Outside Linebacker who also played running back. I watched the first video from his HUDL profile and while my eye for talent is still untrained, he looks like a mini Shawn Oakman. While he can play WR or LB, both Conner and I agree that we'd like to see him at OLB. I can't wait to watch a massive LB on our side for once.

Best of the Rest

Men's Golf Tied for Fourth at Cabo Collegiate - BaylorBears.com

The Bears have three players in the top 25 individually. Baylor is tied for fourth at +12, while SMU and Houston lead the field at +4. Alabama is third at +10. Vanderbilt and UT Arlington are also sitting in fourth with the Bears.

Women's Tennis Defeats No. 28 Texas Tech, 6-1 - BaylorBears.com

Finally! A Baylor team won yesterday! Lady Bears Tennis crushed the Lady Techsters yesterday at the Hurd Tennis Center. The game was scheduled to be outdoors, but given that Texas decided to bring #ThunderSleet down upon us, the match was moved inside.

Oscars and Sports

According to Twitter, I was one of the only people in the States who did not watch the Oscars. The Walking Dead was on though, so I think I did alright.

Anyway, Ellen DeGeneres takes Oscars 'selfie,' breaks Twitter. This literally broke Twitter. The Tweet also passed Barack Obama's Tweet for the most-retweeted Tweet ever.
