Sunday DBR: Threes, Threes, and Threes

Men's Basketball had one of their worst shooting performances of the Scott Drew era last night, but a win is a win. The Lady Bears battle West Virginia today in a de facto Big 12 Championship.

Happy Texas Independence Day y'all! On this we remember those brave settlers who declared themselves free from the rule of Mexico at Washington-on-the-Brazos. Remember Goliad. Remember the Alamo.

Conner wrote a bit yesterday about Midnight Waffles, now it is my turn. OH MY GOODNESS there were so many people there. The Alexander Reading Room was utterly packed full of people. When Bryce and Levi came into the room, we all erupted into cheers. Bryce actually asked if he could help out with anything. The man is star quarterback for the Big 12 Champions and he is asking us if he can help out?! Combine that with him calling one of my friends, "ma'am" and you've got one heck of a representative for our fine University. Seriously, Bryce Petty is such a kind man and it was an honour to meet him and Levi.

Men's Hoops Takes Care of Texas Tech, 59-49 -

It wasn't pretty. In fact, it was downright ugly at times. Still, a win is a win and the Man Bears take another step in the right direction towards the Tournament. Baylor shot a paltry 30.2%, the lowest ever in a Scott Drew-era victory. Tech did a good job of preventing Baylor from getting into the paint as evidence by Baylor's 31 three-point attempts. That is a ridiculous amount of threes. Speaking of threes, Cory Jefferson hit a three!

Despite the horrendous shooting, Baylor won this game. Tech's 18.2% from three and 41.2% from the line certainly helped, but the real statistic of the game is the rebounding differential. Baylor had 21 offensive rebounds, which allowed them to play Snyderball and run out the clock. I remember a series about 2/3 of the way through the second half where Baylor couldn't put the ball in the net at all, but earned about four offensive rebounds, allowing them to bleed around three minutes off the clock. In total, Baylor out-rebounded Tech 40-24. Another significant statistic; Baylor shot 80% from the line. A great free throw shooting outing really helped this team when the regular shots weren't falling.

Honestly, this game should not have been this close. Tech was over-matched in pretty much every area. If Baylor had a normal shooting game, this easily could have been a blowout. Regardless, the Man Bears earned the win at a crucial point. Baylor will host Iowa State on Tuesday at 6:00 in the final home game of the season.

No. 6/5 WBB Hosts No. 11/10 West Virginia For Big 12 Crown -

The Lady Bears face off today at 1:30 in yet another top 10 match-up. The game is a Gold Out, so if you're going (which you should), wear gold. This game is Senior Day, the final (regular season) home game, and the de facto Big 12 Championship game.

It's Gameday, Baylor Nation. See you at the Ferrell. Wear gold and help your Lady Bears win the Big 12 title. #SicEm
— Baylor Lady Bears (@BaylorWBB) March 2, 2014

With a victory today, Mulkey's Lady Bear will claim their fourth straight regular season title. The level of dominance of the Big 12 Kim Mulkey has brought her team to is phenomenal. I know many citizens don't find Women's Basketball near as exciting as Men's Basketball, but I would tell them to watch these Lady Bears. The fundamentals of this team are rock solid.

The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1 for those of you who cannot make the game.

Baseball's Game vs. UNCW Postponed, San Diego Schedule Changes -

Baseball's Monday Foe in San Diego Changes to California -

Baseball Falls 8-5 to California in San Diego -

You get a weather delay and you get a weather delay and you get a weather delay! One would not think games in San Diego would be weather-delayed, but even sunny San Diego gets rain sometimes. Baylor's updated schedule is as follows:

UNC Wilmington Sunday at 1:00 CST
USD Sunday at 5:00 CST
USD California Monday at 1:00 CST

Despite a four-run fifth inning, Baseball fell to California, 8-5. Both teams produced 10 hits, but Cal was able to turn them into more runs than the Bears. Stayed tuned to @BaylorBaseball for updates on the weather and game times.

Softball Splits in Day One of Gulf Coast Classic -

Canion Picks Up Career Win No. 100; SB Wins Two -

The Lady Bears fell short, 10-11, to the No. 24 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Friday. They rebounded and beat Mississippi State in eight innings (Softball normally last seven). Yesterday, Baylor crushed Texas State 11-1 in a game that lasted just five innings. The Lady Bears followed up their drubbing of the Bobcats by out-lasting No.14 South Alabama, 1-0.

Congrats to Whitney Canion on 100th career win. Bears Not Ready to Give Up Big 12 `Belt' Without a Fight -

Baylor Football owns the proverbial Big 12 title belt and they ain't about to give it up, according to TGCAB.

Some position tid-bits: Tre'Von Armstead will play at tight end this upcoming season. The former offensive tackle has some experience at the position, playing TE at the end of the season when the starters were "nicked up". Davion Hall was recruited as a receiver and that is where he will play, so sayeth TGCAB. Football season is coming, y'all.

Best of the Rest

Baylor played an exhibition game at OU last night. Unfortunately, there is nothing regarding the score. This is the only tidbit of news regarding that game:

Your No. 18 Lady Bears take on No. 28 Texas Tech today at 1:00 in Waco to open up Big 12 play.

Men's Golf Heads to Los Cabos, Mexico -

Baylor Men's Golf are in Mexico for the Querencia Cabo Collegiate. No. 26 Baylor will compete against the likes of No. 1 Alabama, No. 13 Houston, No. 17 Houston, and No. 21 Arkansas, as well as three other teams ranked in the 30's. A solid finish in Mexico would no doubt improve Baylor's rankings. The Bears will be up against some first-class teams in the tournament, but you never improve by playing weak teams.

Rockets Soaring with Best of the West - SBN

Many of you on the blog are fans of Houston sports. After the dismal Texans season and the Astros being, well, the Astros, it must be nice for y'all to have a winning team to root for.

Jon's Basketball Game: Creating a sports video game has proven to be rather difficult - SBN

Wichita State completes undefeated regular season with win over Missouri State - SBN

Wichita State are 31-0. Sure, the Missouri Valley Conference is no Big 12, but a perfect season is nothing to scoff at. I haven't seen them play at all this season, so I can't comment on how good they are. Still, I wouldn't want to face the Shockers in the Big Dance.

Premier League, Week 28: Chelsea top, Liverpool second - SBN

Chelsea won, Arsenal lost. Yesterday was a good day. Andre Schürrle scored a hat trick as Chelsea put away Fulham, 3-1, to move four points clear of second-place Liverpool (who beat Southampton, 3-0) in the Premier League standings.

That's about it, folks. This might be the longest DBR I've ever written, so I hope y'all enjoy it. I'll see everyone at the Lady Bears game today. Wear gold and Sic 'em Bears!
