Monday DBR: Spring Football Can't Come Fast Enough

New, comments

The football season is officially over. We will survive.

Not going to lie, I picked this cover photo just because aggy gets so worked up over the "12th Man".

The most popular sporting event in the United States occurred last night, unfortunately signaling the official end of football season. That's alright though; there is just over a month until Baylor's Spring Game. We can make it y'all. Maybe. We have basketball to tide us over, and baseball and softball starts soon. Plus, the Olympics begin in a mere four days. Fear not ye sports-addicted readers, we will make it.

To begin the news, here is Renée Fleming's fantastic rendition of The Star Spangled Banner:

Opera singers are insanely talented. To prove it, I present you a flawless performance of The Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's "The Magic Flute" by Diana Damrau. This aria is considered by many to be one of the most difficult aria's in all of the operatic repertoire. Seriously, do yourself a favor and give it a listen:

Alright, now onto the sports.

Other than the above videos, this GIF will summarize the Super Bowl quite nicely:

In Season: Men's and Women's Basketball

The Men play their next game Tuesday at 6:00. They will be looking to capitalize off the momentum of a huge road win as they take on the Kansas Jayhawks at the Ferrell Center. If you're a student, you should be at this game. If you're not, you still should be at this game.

No. 9 WBB Travels To Oklahoma for ESPN2 Contest - BaylorBears.com

Baylor at Oklahoma, 3 Feb, 6:00 p.m. CT, Norman, OK

The biggest Baylor-related news of the day is the Lady Bears game tonight. The Lady Bears visit to the state to the Oklahoma for the second time this week; I can't say I envy them. There they will face the Sooners of Oklahoma, a team who have been up and down all year. However, the Sooners did just earn a home win over Oklahoma State, who took the Lady Bears to overtime a week ago. Needless to say, the Lady Bears cannot overlook this game or they will end up disappointed.

My short summary of things that Baylor needs to do in order to win the game:

1. Feed Odyssey Sims. There's a reason she is a serious contender for National Player of the Year. This girl is good.

2. Play shutdown D.

3. When Z  gets hot, feed her. Since there are no dunks in the women's game (We miss you Griner!), threes are probably the biggest plays. Let our three-point specialist do her thing.

Off Season: Football and Baseball

National Signing Day is just around the corner. Baylor's 2014 class looks to be pretty much set. Despite rumors to the contrary, it appears as if highly-touted DB John Bonney will not flip his commitment to Baylor and will head to Texas next year. Bonney would have been a good pick-up, but failing to flip him should give Baylor another 2015 scholarship to use (in Mark's thinking, which I agree with).

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>DB John Bonney told a <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23UT&amp;src=hash">#UT</a> commit this weekend that he plans on sticking with the <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Longhorns&amp;src=hash">#Longhorns</a>. That's about it on the football and baseball front. We'll know the official 2014 class on Wednesday.

Best of the Rest

Men's Tennis played Purdue yesterday, whom they defeated 6-1. No Baylor recap is up as of this writing, so check BaylorBears.com for more info. Here's the Purdue write-up.

Around the Sports World

Chelsea and Manchester City face off in a top-three Barclay's Premier League battle today at 2:00 CST at the Etihad. This should be a great football match and one Chelsea really needs to win to stay in the hunt for the Premier League title. Go Blues!

Finally, Waco-based distillery, Balcones Distilling, are raking in the awards. I know many of you here (*coughPetercough*) are a fan of Balcones, so I thought I'd share this will y'all.
