Saturday Daily Bears Report

New, comments

There's something about beating Texas. It doesn't matter what sport it's in, it just feels good. Today, the men's basketball team seeks to pick up where football left off and vanquish the Longhorns in Waco.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Today's DBR is going to be pretty brief. There's little in the way of news that wasn't covered yesterday or last night.

In-Season News: Men's and Women's Basketball

Today's headliner in the Baylor world is the men's basketball showdown in just a few short hours between Baylor and Texas. Texas is a talented, dangerous team, and Baylor's recent struggles have put today's game in the "must win" category. If the Bears fall at home today, the negative momentum could put the entire season in jeopardy. For all you need to know about the game, check out mattisbear's preview from last night. If you can't be in Waco, tune in to watch the game on ESPN3 or Big 12 Network (the channel I've heard of, but whose existence I cannot confirm).

Those are flashy and excellent and for a good cause and if we wear them with the highlighters then I'll gouge my own eyes out.

Women's basketball is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 versus #8 Oklahoma State in Stillwater. Stillwater is a dark place where Baylor's dreams go to die. Hopefully the Lady Bears can change that trend. The Sunday DBR will have all the details, but for right now we have links to tide you over!

No. 12/10 Baylor WBB Takes on No. 8/9 Oklahoma State - Baylor Bears Official Athletic Site - BaylorBears.com
The 12th-ranked Baylor Lady Bears travel to Stillwater, Okla., to take on their third top-10 opponent of the season against eighth-ranked Oklahoma State in a nationally televised game (FSN) on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m.

Women's college basketball - Oklahoma State Cowgirls' Tiffany Bias prepares to meet Baylor Lady Bears' Odyssey Sims - ESPN
Not only are Oklahoma State and Baylor both looking to avoid their second league loss, but Sunday's Big 12 clash pits point guards Tiffany Bias and Odyssey Sims.

Off-Season News: Football and Baseball

Just in case you missed it, Midway WR Devontre Stricklin committed to Baylor's 2015 class yesterday. Stricklin is a burner listed at 6'3", 180 lbs. He held offers from Baylor, Texas Tech, and TCU according to his 247 recruiting profile. The commitment of a receiver not named Ryan Newsome or DaMarkus Lodge muddies up our predictions for the makeup of the 2015 class a bit, and gives weight to the theories that Blake Lynch and/or Chad President may play defense.

He says the Midway-to-Baylor players &quot;are like family.&quot;</p>&mdash; Jake Shaw (@SicEmSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/SicEmSports/statuses/426864667512692736">January 24, 2014</a></blockquote>

It's beautiful to see Baylor begin to lock down Central Texas talent. Midway High School has also given us the likes of Ahmad Dixon and 2014 DE Jamie Jacobs III. Texas is the deepest state for recruiting by far. If Briles continues to see success on the field and send talent to the NFL, then Baylor will be a perennial player for the rich talent of the state. The reality of recruiting right alongside Texas, Oklahoma, and A&M is something Baylor Nation has waited decades for.

The baseball team will be introduced during halftime of today's basketball game, and will be signing autographs before the game at the Ferrell Center. There are only 21 more days until the season starts.

The Best of the Rest

Track is still in Lexington, Kentucky. The official twitter feed of the team published a litany of results that seemed encouraging, but I won't pretend to be an authority on track and field. Check out the results below!

Track & Field Opens Rod McCravy Memorial Meet - Baylor Bears Official Athletic Site - BaylorBears.com
Senior Blake Heriot's win in the 200 meters highlighted the Baylor track and field team's first day at the Rod McCravy Memorial meet on Friday at Nutter Field House.

Tidbits

After telling us each installment was the last one of the season for the past several installments, Jon Bois is apparently finally retiring Breaking Madden for the season. The last episode will pit the Broncos against the Chargers, but give one team unfair advantages and make the other undersized and completely pathetic in terms of athleticism. In order to name players and determine which team would be destroyed, he took donations. The results were spectacular.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>so far, y&#39;all have made 101 donations. i only asked for a $1 minimum. we have not raised $101. we have raised over $2000. &lt;3 &lt;3</p>&mdash; Jon Bois (@jon_bois) <a href="https://twitter.com/jon_bois/statuses/426913756732334081">January 25, 2014</a></blockquote>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>that&#39;s just from the information y&#39;all chose to disclose. my estimate is that it&#39;s closer to about $3600.</p>&mdash; Jon Bois (@jon_bois) <a href="https://twitter.com/jon_bois/statuses/426913930368131073">January 25, 2014</a></blockquote>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"lang="en"><p>**BREAKING** SEAHAWKS WIN, 74-67. both teams played hard. both teams gave to some really rad charities. thanks, everybody.</p>&mdash; Jon Bois (@jon_bois) <a href="https://twitter.com/jon_bois/statuses/426967011281743872">January 25, 2014</a></blockquote>

So, the Seahawks are destined to win the Breaking Madden Super Bowl by a few hundred points. If you've been living under a rock and haven't read Breaking Madden, you've got plenty of material to catch up on before the next episode. If you're caught up, bask in the idea that the weird, unique brand of sports humor found on SB Nation is doing some real good in the world.
