Week 10 CFB Viewing Guide and Baylor's Perfect Weekend

I've gotten more than a few questions this week about who Baylor fans should be rooting for tomorrow in the one game that might actually matter to our season. It's time to answer them.

Streeter Lecka

Because most of the Top 10 have the weekend off, there's really only two games on tomorrow's schedule that could potentially impact Baylor's season in any real way: #4 Ohio State vs. Purdue and #3 Florida State vs. #7 Miami (BCS rankings, all).  #1 Alabama, #2 Oregon, #5 Stanford, and of course our Baylor Bears are all on byes this week, with all of the foregoing except Alabama slated to play next Thursday.

My outlook on all of this is relatively simple: there are very few situations where it helps Baylor for a higher-ranked team to beat one beneath it.  That is doubly true for teams above us.  We need as many of them as possible to lose.

For one of this weekend's games, our preferred outcome is simple: if the Purdue Boilermakers could somehow beat the Ohio State Buckeyes, that would be amazing.  First, we wouldn't hear any more from Ohio State fans about being undefeated.  Second, we'd gain a spot leading up to our game against OU in 6 days.

The outcome of the second is a bit more complicated, but not much.  Tomorrow night, the #7-ranked Miami Hurricanes travel to Tallahassee to play the #3 Florida State Seminoles.  FSU is a huge favorite to win, which is either exactly what you expected from this particular outcome or contrary to everything a Top 10 matchup is supposed to be.

For Baylor's part, despite the fact that Miami is undefeated and almost sure to jump us in the BCS should they win, that's exactly what we need them to do.  Miami isn't as good a team as FSU, almost surely, and is much more likely to lose later, even if they win tomorrow.  But a Miami win knocks FSU from the ranks of the unbeaten, given us the opportunity to rise higher eventually.  The best possible outcome would be a Miami win now with a Florida State win in the ACC Championship Game, leaving both teams with a loss.

For tomorrow, go Boilermakers and Hurricanes!
