I apparently missed the news recently that Baylor had welcomed in another transfer on the DL from Penn State in the form of 6'9" Shawn Oakman, who was dismissed from the Nittany Lions football team this March after an incident involving an on-campus eatery. (The link in the preceding sentence is worth highlighting again. It tells the entire story from Oakman's point-of-view and talks a bit about what brought him to Baylor).
I'll always be in favor of taking chances with transfers if and only if the coaching staff believes they have learned their lesson. Oakman sounds like one of those guys. Obviously, the story I provided above is telling just one side of what happened, but it is the side less heard to this point and I have no reason to doubt Oakman's veracity when he says he wishes things had transpired differently. He sounds like he realizes what he has had and lost and knows that, as he says, Baylor is his last chance. The article talks quite a bit about incoming Penn State coach Bill O'Brien's attempts to create a new atmosphere at PSU after everything that has happened there in the last year, and Oakman might have been a casualty of that effort. The only way he would have ended up at Baylor is with the strong recommendation of PSU people behind him to Brian Norwood, Baylor's former DC and current Assistant Head Coach. If Briles and Bennett are convinced he can contribute positively, that's basically all I need to know. If you'll recall, the last troubled defensive lineman we brought in from PSU turned out pretty well.
Oakman was a member of Penn State's 2011 recruiting class and a freshman this past season in Happy Valley. Transferring now means he has to sit out a year before having three years to play three. A year from now, the former 4* strongside DE could be a huge addition to Baylor's defensive line opposite 2012 recruit Javonte Magee, the top-rated defensive recruit in Briles' tenure at Baylor. For more information about Oakman, here are his profiles from Rivals, Scout, 247Sports, and ESPN (each is a separate link).
EDIT: Oakman redshirted this past season at PSU, so he was going to be a RS-Fr this year. He'll sit out, making him a RS-So either way next season. Still should have 3 years to play 3. He can probably apply for a waiver of some kind, but I highly doubt it is granted.
