Aside from the fact that our baseball team dropped its first 2 games of the season in California after bludgeoning UCLA in game 1, Baylor had a pretty solid weekend in its remaining sports ventures. Last night on Senior Night at home against Texas Tech, Baylor's MBB team dominated Texas Tech en route to the most conference wins (12) and wins (25) ever in a single season. To celebrate the senior's final home game, Baylor rolled out a starting lineup containing erstwhile star Quincy Acy, Anthony Jones, and the little-used Fred Ellis, all seniors. It was a classy move and one I loved to see, especially when all three played extremely well. A.J. Walton also played very well for Baylor, as did Perry Jones III, who needed a front court like Tech's to reestablish himself and gain confidence. Their next game (the last before the conference tournament starts next week) will take place Saturday in Ames, Iowa against the Cyclones of Iowa State.
It was also a night of records for our #1-ranked Baylor Lady Bears, who continued their undefeated run in a nail-biter against the defending national champion Texas A&M Aggies in College Station. Baylor won the game 69-62 after having been up 15 early, losing the lead, actually trailing in the game, and then finally regaining the lead for good. Brittney Griner and Odyssey Sims each had 25 points for Baylor, who is now 30-0 (17-0 in-conference) on the season. I didn't know this before last night, but if Baylor wins out, they can be the first team ever in major college basketball to win 40 games in the same season. If we're talking about records we want to see, I'll take that one.
One thing to worry about for the WBB team is a resurgent A&M. Fresh off a 20-point beatdown in Waco a few weeks ago, A&M showed massive improvement, particularly on offense, and was able to make a game out of what looked like a blowout early on. Baylor ran into trouble with A&M when it had to beat them the fourth time last year in the tournament, and it looks like we're going to have to do the same again at some point unless someone else does it first. Gary Blair is a good coach and A&M plays hard for him. They're not the biggest threat to WBB running the table, but they're a threat.
Let's hit the jump for links about this weekend's action and everything else going on in the world of Baylor athletics.
A ton of links tonight so bear with me. I went a little overboard.

COLLEGE STATION - Baylor center Brittney Griner celebrated the Lady Bears' record-tying 30-0 start with one smooth motion toward taunting Texas A&M fans Monday night. Moments later, a satisfied Griner was singing softly in the tunnel and celebrating with teammates, after the No. 1 Lady Bears toppled the defending national champion Aggies 69-62 before 10,265 fans. Griner and guard Odyssey Sims scored 25 points each in propelling Baylor (30-0, 17-0) to a tie for the best start in Big 12 history (2009-10 Nebraska) - with the icing on the cake being a triumph in the last scheduled meeting between the Lady Bears and Southeastern Conference-bound A&M (20-8, 11-6). The last scheduled showdown - although the powerful programs could meet in next week's Big 12 tournament - featured some memorable moments, the most notable with 3:04 remaining and Baylor clinging to a 63-60 lead.

What better time than on Leap Day to exhort the Dolphins to make the leap and take a chance. This is the year for this conservative franchise and its leaders to do something out of character. INDIANAPOLIS -- I met with both star quarterbacks at the combine Saturday night and came away impressed, as anyone would be. Anyone. It's impossible to not like Stanford's Andrew Luck and Baylor's Robert Griffin III. Luck is humble; you can tell he's uneasy saying nice things about himself, or things designed to paint him as the Next Big Thing in the NFL. Griffin's humble too, but charismatically so; he has no problem telling you anything you want to know about him.
Recruiting:

"There are 11 Division I-A football teams in the state of Texas [UT San Antonio and Texas State will make it 12 this fall], so there are a lot of choices for those players to stay in state and allow their parents and the people who are kin to them stay and watch them play," said Baylor coach Art Briles. "And you'll play a high brand of football. There's no reason to jump out of your backyard when you've got everything you need in it."
