Help finding video

Does anyone know how to obtain a video recording of Baylor games from past seasons? For example, I'd love to get a copy of OU vs. BU in 2011. Is it even possible to get recordings of prior games? Or could someone point me in the right direction? I'm guessing it would have to be through the network (ESPN, ABC, FOX) as opposed to Baylor. Any help would be much appreciated in trying to figure this out.

Baylor Jumps up 12 spots in recruit rankings...

Just found this. Sic'em Bears.

With the addition of Allerik Freeman to next years roster, Baylor has moved up 12 spots from 25th to 13th in class rankings.

The link is to an insider article, but you can see the chart for the rankings. I have to say that I am very excited for the Bears to make a run next season. Lets hope that Isaiah is fully mended by then and the team is ready.

2013 Kentucky Basketball Non-Conference Schedule

Check out December 6th Vs. Baylor in Cowboys Stadium. This is amazing!

Looks like it will be set up to be a highly televised game with a lot of national attention...but it could just be part of a tournament. I'm not sure.

Either way, the 2013-14 basketball season is stacking up great so far. Let's just hope that Cory Jefferson, Isaiah Austin and the rest of the team come out on the court and dominate the competition.

The Official Baylor Guide to the 2013 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational

This Thanksgiving, Baylor will be traveling to the island of Maui for the 2013 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational where they will join Arkansas, California, Dayton, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Syracuse and host Chaminade in the 30th edition of the premier early-season men's college basketball tournament. The 2013 Championship Round will take place November 25-27 as the Bears will look for its first Maui championship in its second appearance and tries to start the 2013-14 basketball season off with a bang.

Please let us know if you will be joining the Bears in Maui or if you have any questions about the Tournament in the comments section. Aloha and mahalo.

What´s the story behind the Tournament? How did it all start?

On December 23, 1982…little known NAIA Chaminade upset top-ranked Virginia, led by three-time MVP Ralph Sampson, 77-72. Called "the greatest upset in college basketball history," the win put host Chaminade University on the map nationwide and led to the creation of the Maui Classic which is now known as the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational, the longest running early-season college hoops tournament. Read the full story written by Alexander Wolff in Sports Illustrated about the "Greatest Upset Never Seen."

What will my experience be like in Maui?

The Lahaina Civic Center provides college basketball’s best neutral court atmosphere. The intimately seated LCC, with only 2,400 seats, gives each team’s fan base an opportunity to provide a home court advantage at a neutral site game. There are few better basketball experiences when the LCC is full with the crowd supporting their teams. Don’t believe us? Take it from the coaches:

"Obviously, this is the pinnacle and the crème de la crème of all preseason tournaments. This is the kingpin and any other analogy you’d like to use. And that’s why it’s so special." – Mark Few, Gonzaga University, November 2009

"And there's something -- this atmosphere may be as good a neutral court atmosphere that you could play in. It's better than NCAA tournament atmosphere because you can feel the crowd. They're actually a part of it." - Bill Self, University of Kansas, November 2011

What are some of the best activities to do on island?

Go to the beach – Ka’anapali Beach, Lahaina was named America’s top beach in the 2013 Travelers’ Choice Beaches Awards

Will we ever get another commit?!?!

I know NSD is a long way away, but the lack of commits is a little concerning. Pretty sure we had more by this time last year and our competitors are doing much better. I was surprised the Spring Game did not result in any new commits.

We have a lot of quality guys interested, but few bites. I'm very impressed with our 3 (or 2) so far, but we need big help on the offensive line. What other positions do you all see as vital in this class?

With all the noise lately on the opposing views of Gundy and the OSU AD on how non-conference gams should be scheduled (easy v. hard), what are your thoughts on how the Bears should approach this? For now, BU has only cupcake games scheduled through 2017. There are some with the opinion that scheduling non-conference games against big name, marquee oponents will be necesary to get national recognition. Thoughts?

Here is an article lnked from ESPN today that got me thinking about it - http://newsok.com/debunking-mike-gundys-scheduling-philosophy/article/3781498

Optimist vs Realist vs Something Else-ist: Brittney Griner and the NBA

This is a response to Mark C. Moore's post "About the Brittney Griner / Mark Cuban / NBA thing". Because I am long winded and can not (apparently) speak my mind in a succinct manner, I was not able to post my thoughts as a comment in that thread, so here they are...

I'm a realist. I'm also an optimist. This can be a curse...as it usually causes a great stir of emotions in me that can not be contained. I Hulk out on some poor, unsuspecting innocents and wake up the next morning - cold, naked, and ashamed - on the nettle-strewn floor of a sun-dappled forest as a friendly deer licks my face.

But in this Cuban/Griner situation, it helps me see a bigger picture. While I see the realism in saying this probably won't (and maybe shouldn't) happen, I also see the optimism in saying it might (and really should) happen. And I believe the possible positives far outweigh the possible negatives.

Yes, there is a plethora of reasons this could end poorly for Griner: she could get hurt, it could damage her credibility, she could get embarrassed, etc. They're all very sound and based in realism. But there are also many good reasons to believe this could a) be positive for Brittney and b) be a watershed moment in sports history.

As has been noted, this would a be a PR move for Cuban, the Mavs, the NBA, the D-league, and the Summer League. It would also be a PR boost for BG (as well as Baylor). Imagine how her management team could market her if she was known as the first female to play in a professional male sport.

I can see the Nike spots now: James Brown sings, "This is a man's world. This is a man's world." Shots of Brittney training, blocking shots, dunking. The Godfather of Soul continues as The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, joins in, "But it ain't nothin'...No nothin'...Without a woman." Brittney faces up one-on-one with one of Nike's other b-ball stars (Kobe, Lebron, Dirk) and as they glare at each other, the slogan: "No Man Can Stop Me". You thought you got jazzed over RG3's Adidas spots...

Before I go on, there's also the probability this would add fuel to the fire of people who claim (jokingly or seriously) that she is more male than female. This move would shine a spotlight on their bully pulpit and give them a chance to preach their vitriol to a national congregation. But in my opinion, these idiots should be brought out into the spotlight so we can all laugh at their complete lunacy.

Back to the optimism...what if, in a further PR move, she was actually called up to the Mavs and stepped foot on the floor during an actual NBA game? That would be a huge moment not only for Brittney, but also for sports history. And the PR and marketing behind that moment would be massive and important, which I believe would help us see fewer comments like this:

She's a female basketball player. A league for female basketball players exists; it's called the WNBA. It doesn't make her any less of a basketball player to do it in the WNBA as opposed to the NBA, nor does it take away from anything she's done that she did it against other girls.

I find this comment troubling...here's why:

If you don't know who that is (or can't see the pic).

Just for the sake of argument:

"He's a black baseball player. Leagues for black baseball players exist; they're called the Negro Leagues. It doesn't make him any less of a baseball player to do it in the Negro Leagues as opposed to the Major Leagues, nor does it take away from anything he's done that he did it against other blacks."

The idea that anyone shouldn't try to compete and should only play amongst their own kind is just plain wrong in my book. Because in my book (which should be hitting the shelves sometime around the Holiday Season), we're all of the same kind...Humankind.

Mark, I don't know you. We've conversed on Twitter a few times, I've been a blog reader since the early days, but that's it. I'm pretty sure you had the most positive of intentions with this statement, but you know what they say about good intentions and their propensity to be used as paving materials for passageways into nether worlds...

Regardless, I'm not trying to flame you for making the statement. Just pointing out that it's a mindset that needs (in my opinion) to be changed.

Full disclosure: A year ago, I wouldn't have had this reaction to that statement. I considered myself a believer in the power of women to do whatever they want, but I was overwhelmingly a realist. Then last May, my wife gave birth to the most beautiful, amazing, talented, intelligent little girl in the world...and since then, the power in me has shifted from realist to optimist to, ultimately, (gulp) feminist.

It may sound silly for a man to call himself a feminist. But I am. And I'm not alone, there are dozens of us. DOZENS! So as a man, who considers himself a feminist, how could I ever look my daughter in the face if I didn't point out the fallacy in the argument that Brittney Griner should stay in the women's league because she is a woman and entering the men's league might cause her embarrassment?

There is no way anyone can convince me that my daughter has any limitations because of her gender. And the same holds true for Brittney Griner.

I already point Brittney out to my daughter as we watch the games and tell her how Brittney is proof of just how powerful and talented she can someday be. Imagine the lesson I (and other moms and dads) can teach my daughter if Brittney becomes the first female to play in a professional male sport.

I just don't see how the possible negatives can ever come close to outweighing the probable positives in this case. No matter how I look at it - realist, optimist, or feminist - I only see upside.

Baylor: Point Guard U?

It's a probably a crazy stretch to suggest that Baylor University is Point Guard U, but in each of their team's last post-season tournament games, Odyssey Sims and Pierre Jackson certainly threw down some sick stats!

In the Lady Bears' drumming of Prairie View A&M last night, Junior point guard Sims had ZERO turnovers, TEN assists, FIVE steals, and 12 points on 50% shooting from the field! Even though the performance came against a 16-seed opponent, those are spectacular numbers. Odyssey continues to make the case that she is the second best player in women's college basketball this year.

In Baylor men's victory over Arizona State University last Friday night, P-Jack had SIXTEEN NIT-record breaking assists, FOUR steals, and 26 total points because of making 17 out of 21 free throws. Even though he only had four baskets, those BU fans who closely watch this team understand that he is a difference maker whether he's scoring or dishing assists. His three consecutive baskets before halftime helped Baylor pull within 2 points of ASU and gain some crucial momentum going into the break.

Both of these players set the tempo as team leaders, and it is a joy to watch their workmanlike, tireless approach to the game on both ends of the court!

The BU Basketball Player Formerly Known as the "Sharpshooting Guard"

As a Baylor fan who regularly drinks the Kool-Aid for the Green & Gold, I am hesitant to criticize any coach or player on any of our athletic squads, especially when I don't have any inside knowledge that criticism is deserved.

That said, I am astonished at the statistical decline that has characterized shooting guard Brady Heslip's game. There are some glaring concerns about the change in his performance from 2011-12 season to the current season. I am aware that opponents were more focused on him this season after his very successful sophomore year, but it seems there must be something more to his performance decline.

He had a statistical decline from last year to this year in four out of the five categories relevant to his position:

Field goal shooting percentage dropped 8 points (from 46% to 38%)

3-pt FG shooting percentage dropped 9 points (from 46% to 37%)

Free throw shooting percentage dropped an unbelievable 14 points (from 92% to 78%)

Points per game dropped 1.9 (from 10.2 to 8.3)

On a positive note, his assist to turnover ratio improved from 2.18 to 2.36.

Given that Baylor dropped 8 out of 9 games that were decided by 5 points or less, how much of difference would an improved statistical year by Brady have made for this team? What if his points per game had gone up 1.9 rather than down 1.9? That would have been a positive swing of 3.8 points per game for our Bears.

As far as I know, Heslip may spend more time in the gym than anybody else on this team, but based on game results, it doesn't appear that way. While getting separation from defensive opponents has been tough for Brady, he's missed a lot of open shots this year. And needless to say--but I will anyway--no separation skills are required for free throw shooting.

I don't believe the blame for Heslip's decline falls on the coaching staff. It's up to Brady Heslip to re-earn the title "Sharpshooting Guard"* and help position this basketball program for success in his final year at Baylor.

*As quoted in the 2012-2013 Baylor Men's Basketball Media Almanac

The Winter of Florida State's Discontent

It seems that Florida State fans are not happy with the ACC and are ready to move. There is considerable discontent with the ACC and little to no faith in its future. The Clemson boards are quiet as mice. I don't know if this means they are waiting on Florida State or that they are afraid they won't make the cut and don't want to be embarrassed by a turn-down. This article (and especially the comments) make for interesting reading.

Did we have any doubt as to what Robert would continue to do? Is the Nissan Heisman House commercial in his Baylor uniform, AFTER HE GRADUATED, not enough to get this man a free "gut pak" at Vitek's? ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!?!

Now a small limerick for the man who was the impetus for that 2014 jewel on the Brazos: Robert Griffin III.

The QB known as RG3,

Griner's Greatness

I am a proud Baylor alumnus living on the staked plains of west Texas. I am active in local talk show banter; indeed, I even have a Baylor-centric nickname on one of the shows. I am tolerated by these gentlemen because they know that I am a member of the all-but-one-club. That is, I happily support Texas Tech, inasmuch as it is the local team which feeds our economy and educated my parents, unless they are playing my Bears.

Thus, I attend most Tech sporting events, no matter who is the opponent. I can therefore relate that basketball interest, and thus, attendance this season has been sparse for both genders. However, there was something different in the Lubbock air this week, as the top-ranked Lady Bears were coming to town. People were discussing it at work, and the sports shows couldn't get enough. There was a shared belief that these Lady Raiders could once again topple Griner, Sims et al. This optimism was not unfounded. After all, quite the rivalry had been established between these old SWC foes over time, and it only intensified after the infamous Griner/Barncastle tussle a few years ago. Add to that the fact that Texas Tech was the last team to beat the Lady Bears in conference play, the Lady Raiders possession of second place in this year's Big 12 standings, and $3 tickets being offered to this year's game, and an upset seemed plausible.

I was one of those Lubbockites who could not wait for the game. I knew, from attending this battle the last few years in Lubbock, that the crowd would be raucous. I saw my Lady Bears blow out Notre Dame in South Bend, yet I thought this game would be closer. I argued that people were mistaken to focus solely on Brittney, as our team was balanced: Sims, Hayden, Prince, Pope, Madden... We had a veritable murderer's row that could beat you any given night. Indeed, our team was unveiling their new yellow Nike jerseys which only read "Bears" where one would usually see a last name. I figured Curry, Tech's very likable coach, would be determined not to let our 6'8" All-American beat her on this cold January night.

The event began as anticipated, with the United Spirit Arena buzzing. The cost of tickets coupled with a desire to see these Bears fall at the hands of the Red Raiders created an atmosphere I had not recently seen in Lubbock. Booing commenced every time the Lady Bears came onto the floor; chants of RAIDER POWER echoed from one side of the arena to the other; even Raider Red came out with fake guns literally blazing.

The tip off was a harbinger of things to come, as Tech essentially conceded and sent out a 5'6" player to "challenge" Brittney. However, there would be no David and Goliath in this battle, as I saw the most dominating performance I have witnessed in that arena since Kevin Durant kicked Red Raider booty (and everyone else's) as a Longhorn. Brittney seemed to want to beat the Red Raider players and the vocal crowd into psychological submission. Gone was this thought that the Bears would share the load in this game. Brittney was a one-woman wrecking machine, putting up 40 points, grabbing 15 boards, and swatting 7 Tech shots in the process. Her tenacity and aggressiveness were a sight to behold. She finished with an exclamation point, throwing down an awesome two-handed dunk to get her final two points of the night. The 30 point margin of victory qualified as a rout. If this would be my last chance to see Brittney up close, it did not disappoint.

As Griner walked off the floor, she had to be proud. After all, this hushed arena was the site of one of the worst incidents of her college career. This crowd had never been kind to her, despite her contrition and other-worldly basketball talents. Perhaps the opponent, who played valiantly, had forgotten who they were dealing with. Thus, she probably figured she'd remind them of why she was the reigning Player of the Year and defending NCAA Champion.

Any questions?

MBB Team is Not the Same as Last Year's Elite Eight Team

This year's Baylor Bears men's basketball team is a different type team than last year's Elite Eight team. I believe this year's version is even better. Here's three quick reasons why...

1) This high octane team shows its athletic prowess as a defensive unit as much as it does as an offensive machine. Our Bears' defense ranks at the top of the Big XII statistically and that has not been the case in recent years;

2) Isaiah Austin is delivering in his freshman year what Perry Jones III couldn't through his two years on campus: consistency and reliability; and

3) The development of Cory Jefferson, Gary Franklin, Rico Gathers, and A J Walton. From a true freshman all the way to a seasoned senior, these guys have made significant strides in contributing both offensively and defensively. And this team is better because of each one of them.

Baylor Football 2013 Resolutions

1) Become more ruthless on offense.

No more of the "prevent offense" like we saw in the game against Oklahoma State this year, the games against K-State and TCU in 2011, and the game against A&M in 2010. In each of those games we took our foot off the gas and lost two of them, while barely beating TCU in 2011 and Oklahoma State this year (only by the grace of our sweet Lord Baby Jesus). We have immense offensive talent and a coaching staff to match. No more relying on our defense to come up with a stop in key situations, its been proven over the last three years that the defense relies on the offense to score at will. No more being satisfied with three-and-outs regardless of how big our lead may be. I think Briles is slowly figuring that out and that gives me hope that they will take steps to try and achieve this objective in 2013.

2) Get better on defense.

It's comical, I know. Something we say every year but then it comes down to actually doing something about it and it turns out like the conversation I have with myself every January:

Me: I’m gonna get in shape this year and drop a few extra pounds!

My subconscious: I got 4 years worth of Keystone Light, Vitek’s, and Penland Clyde’s breakfast sandwiches that says you aren’t.

Me: SHUT UP, ME!

There might be something wrong with me. Anyways, I'm hoping in his 3rd year that Bennett and his unit will figure it out and maybe, just MAYBE, we'll get a top 75 defense this year. My God, can you imagine? Our prolific offense with a top 75 defense? Hell, that's at least a Big 12 championship right there, perhaps even a chance at the National Championship! Maybe I am losing it...

3) Find a home for Ahmad Dixon.

Is he a safety or a linebacker or both? With Brian Nance and our other 4* LBs coming in, and with how well Lackey and Hager played this past year, I'm in favor of Dixon moving to safety and benching Holl. Not just benching him, but also taking his helmet away and maybe even chaining him to the communications trunk until the last five games of the season when he actually starts playing somewhat decently. Lackey has terrific coverage ability and is a ball-hawk and I think he could certainly fill the nickelback spot. With Dixon in the secondary I'm comfortable with the potential mismatch of a pass-catching TE or a speedy RB on Lackey, and even then I don't think it's that much of a mismatch given Lackey's athletic ability. However, by the same token Dixon as a linebacker creates a mismatch every play for the opposing offense, except that all they had to do this past year was throw it at Chance Casey (sometimes that 4 year limit is truly a blessing). Ultimately, I'm just trying to figure out the best way for Dixon to be an every down play maker so that he gets the recognition he deserves from NFL scouts. Hopefully he breaks out nationally this year.

4) Put together something that at least resembles a special teams unit.

I like Levi Norwood returning kicks, but other than that our special teams units are a joke. I find myself constantly wondering if Art Briles and his staff even know what special teams are. Maybe @TinyArtBriles is right and the real Coach Briles has an unquenchable thirst/love for pooch kicks. I don't know. But we need a real kicker, a real coverage unit (both kickoffs and punts), and better return blockers. To prove how bad our special times are, Tiny Art Briles everyone:

@TinyArtBriles: I get an extra $10,000 each time we make a field goal...we're calling it the "Miracles Clause" #BrilesContractExtensionTerms

5) Make the last year at Floyd Casey Stadium a special one.

We have great potential every single year, but for this upcoming season the Big 12 is going to be wide open and the possibility for the Bears to jump out and take the conference championship is not that farfetched. TCU and OSU are the top two teams heading in to the 2013 season, but after them its not so clear. What better way to say farewell to our beloved off-campus stadium than another undefeated home record and a Big 12 Championship? Its not such a crazy thought anymore my fellow Bears fans. I want to open the 2014 season at the new Baylor Stadium as the reigning Big 12 champs and I want the Brazos to look like Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras, full of sail-gaters and unruly (but respectful) fans. SIC 'EM!

Anyways, those are my resolutions for the Bears. Let me know what y'all think.

1) Become more ruthless on offense.

No more of the "prevent offense" like we saw in the game against Oklahoma State this year, the games against K-State and TCU in 2011, and the game against A&M in 2010.
