Mack Brown has resigned as Head Coach of the Texas Longhorns

Tom Pennington

Less than an hour before CFB's biggest trophy finds its newest home, reports have surfaced that Texas Head Coach Mack Brown has decided to resign.

This story is never going to end. Less than a day after Texas lost out on any chance it had to woo Nick Saban with his signing a new, long-term extension to remain at Alabama, Mack Brown has apparently decided to call it quits at the University of Texas. According to the tweets below, he will coach the bowl game in San Antonio but will not be the head coach in 2014.  My guess is that he remains on staff in some capacity, but I don't know for sure.  SB Nation has a post up on the mothership about the ongoing story and not one, but two blogs dedicated to the Texas Longhorns.  I decided we needed a post here because: a) there's literally nothing else going on at this point on a Saturday, and b) this affects us because we share a conference.

For the record, I don't think this absolves Chip Brown or his cronies from any of the incredibly specious reporting they've done through this saga.  Later events you didn't predict don't make previous, numerous wrong predictions go away.  That's not how this works.  It'll detract attention from that part of the story, because of course, but if you're believing anything coming from that segment again, I can't help you.

One thing that needs to be said about all this: Art Briles' name being mentioned is a foregone conclusion.  It's going to happen.  And it won't be because he didn't take his name out of the mix, either.  Those that want to believe Texas can steal him will believe that no matter what he says, when, or how.  So if that's something that is going to bother you, you should probably try to avoid this story as much as possible.

I don't really have any thoughts on this, to be truthful with you.  Just thought people would want to know.  And this story gives me the chance to post the following gif:
