After enduring a monotonous bye week, the Bears were back in action against their final non-conference opponent, the University of Louisiana Monroe Warhawks. By this time in the season we had seen our Bears utterly destroy their last two opponents with our high-flying offense and surprisingly stingy defense. Confidence was running high in Waco but there were many a disbeliever outside of it.
Some, including myself, were hoping that playing the Warhawks would silence those who doubted Briles' fined tuned weapon of destruction. After all they had proven to be giant slayers just a year before, beating Arkansas and nearly defeating Auburn. They even scared us in 2012 with their tricksy two QB system. Despite losing to Oklahoma 34-0 to start the season, ULM won their next two which included a road victory over ACC school, Wake Forest.
Alas, Baylor would go on to blast the 'hawks right out the sky and win 70-7. Scoring 35 points in the first quarter alone, the Bears would need just two more quarters to reach 70 points for the second time that season. And it wasn't just the offense having all the fun. In the first quarter the defense scored twice on interception returns giving the Baylor defense four defensive TD's in just nine quarters of play.
Despite leaving yet another team shell-shocked, a they beat team nearly twice as bad as OU did, the prognosticators still were on the fence about Baylor. At least the Baylor faithful could see what a special season this was going to be.
