Baylor: The Invisible Top Ten Team

If the NCAA Top 25 rankings for football weren't compiled until after Week 4 games were completed, Baylor would likely start out as a Top 10 team. Unfortunately, the polls are started in pre-season when pundits and coaches alike just don't know who's really got what.

Case in point: UT Longhorns, USC Trojans, Michigan Wolverines. All three are teams which were lauded highly in pre-season, but have simply underperformed. The only thing impressive about these teams is how poorly they have played.

The pundits' and coaches' inability to clearly predict the future resulted in Baylor not being in the Top 25 at the beginning of the season. The penance required for a team who does not start in the Top 25 is to have crawl its way up the poll week by week.

This week Baylor should jump Florida, Northwestern, and Michigan in the polls. Yesterday, Florida (vs. Tennessee) and Northwestern (vs. Maine) each had 14-point margins of victories against much lesser opponents. Michigan, for the second week in a row, found itself barely escaping with a victory (vs. UConn 0-3) in what should have been a "cupcake" game.

It is unlikely that Baylor will rise this week higher than 17th because most teams in the polls took care of business in solid fashion as did Baylor vs. ULM. Without a doubt, Art Briles' team is better than Northwestern, Michigan, and Florida.
