So let's see what changed while we weren't playing this weekend :)
The Baylor Effect on Opposing Defenses
Here is where our opponents rank at this point in the season:
Games | Yards | Yds/Gm | Rank | Points | Points/Gm | Rank
Buffalo | 8 | 3042 | 380.25 | 49 | 183 | 22.88 | 39 |
ULM | 9 | 3733 | 414.78 | 78 | 256 | 28.44 | 76 |
WVU | 9 | 4074 | 452.67 | 101 | 270 | 30.00 | 82 |
KSU | 8 | 2903 | 362.88 | 30 | 176 | 22.00 | 32 |
ISU | 8 | 3820 | 477.50 | 113 | 319 | 39.88 | 116 |
Kansas | 8 | 3573 | 446.63 | 99 | 256 | 32.00 | 95 |
Here is where our opponents would rank had they not played Baylor:
Games | Yards | Yds/Gm | Rank | Points | Points/Gm | Rank
Buffalo | 7 | 2261 | 323.00 | 12 | 113 | 16.14 | 7 |
ULM | 8 | 2952 | 369.00 | 36 | 186 | 23.25 | 41 |
WVU | 8 | 3202 | 400.25 | 71 | 197 | 24.63 | T-50 |
KSU | 7 | 2452 | 350.29 | 21 | 141 | 20.14 | T-22 |
ISU | 7 | 3106 | 443.71 | 98 | 248 | 35.43 | 106 |
Kansas | 7 | 2830 | 404.29 | 73 | 197 | 28.14 | 76 |
Wow, Buffalo would be top 15 in Total Defense and top 10 in Scoring Defense if they hadn't played BU! Both of our FBS non-conference opponents that everyone complains about would be top 50 in scoring defense and Total defense. K-State looks good even with the game against us but they look really impressive without it. Iowa State is bad and getting worse, I would not be surprised to see them go 0-fer and Kansas pick up the win in the Big 12 pillow fight.
The Baylor Effect on Opposing Offenses
Our opponents' current offensive ranks:
Games | Points | Points/Gm | Rank | Yards | Yds/Gm | Rank
Buffalo | 8 | 248 | 31.00 | T-55 | 3047 | 380.88 | 84 |
ULM | 9 | 208 | 23.11 | 96 | 3328 | 369.78 | 93 |
WVU | 9 | 213 | 23.67 | 92 | 3576 | 397.33 | 76 |
KSU | 8 | 257 | 32.13 | 49 | 3298 | 412.25 | 63 |
ISU | 8 | 185 | 23.13 | 95 | 2706 | 338.25 | 108 |
Kansas | 8 | 137 | 17.13 | 114 | 2340 | 292.50 | 118 |
Removing the Baylor game doesn't have much affect on our opponents total offensive but does hurt most of their scoring offense numbers:
Games | Points | Points/Gm | Rank | Yards | Yds/Gm | Rank
Buffalo | 7 | 235 | 33.57 | T-39 | 2684 | 383.43 | 83 |
ULM | 8 | 201 | 25.13 | T-86 | 3033 | 379.13 | 87 |
WVU | 8 | 171 | 21.38 | 102 | 3182 | 397.75 | 76 |
KSU | 7 | 232 | 33.14 | 41 | 2853 | 407.57 | 69 |
ISU | 7 | 178 | 25.43 | 82 | 2532 | 361.71 | 96 |
Kansas | 7 | 123 | 17.57 | 114 | 2032 | 290.29 | 118 |
We impact our opponents from a scoring standpoint but have little effect on their ability to move the ball except for ULM who we held almost 100 yards under their average and Iowa St. who we held almost 200 yards below their average. One thing worth noting, at home we have held every opponent under their season average for yards and (not counting WVU) well below their season average points. Not good for the Sooners. On the road we give up slightly above average yards but still keep scoring down. We'll see how that affects things in Stillwater.
Conclusions
Not much has changed since last week. KSU was the only mover defensively with both their Total and Scoring Defense numbers improving. ULM, WVU, and KSU all won and all of their ranks improved offensively. Iowa St. almost got shut out again and their dumpster fire continues to burn more and more brightly. Kansas is still offensively inept.
BTW, if you haven't taken a look at JudgeChamber's NetScoringImpact post you should, cool stuff there.
