The Baylor Effect - Week 9

Going with a little different layout, let me know how much you love/hate it in the comments.

The effect of Baylor's Offense

Here is where all of the teams we have played currently rank defensively:

Games Yards Yds/Gm Rank Points Points/Gm Rank
Buffalo 8 3042 380.25 46 183 22.88 T-39
ULM 8 3222 402.75 71 219 27.38 T-65
WVU 8 3620 452.50 102 243 30.38 85
KSU 7 2654 379.14 44 169 24.14 50
ISU 7 3372 481.71 115 278 39.71 116
Kansas 7 3155 450.71 101 221 31.57 92

Adjusting their statistics by removing the Baylor game from each teams' totals they look like this:

Games Yards Yds/Gm Rank Points Points/Gm Rank
Buffalo 7 2261 323.00 13 113 16.14 8
ULM 7 2441 348.71 20 149 21.29 T-27
WVU 7 2748 392.57 T-62 170 24.29 T-52
KSU 6 2203 367.17 35 134 22.33 T-32
ISU 6 2658 443.00 96 207 34.50 T-105
Kansas 6 2412 402.00 71 162 27.00 65

You can see that playing Baylor is terribly destructive to our opponents statistically and should account for how they are viewed. In fact it might be interesting to develop a ranking based off of something like this to see how disruptive a team is. I'm pretty sure Baylor would rank as the most disruptive team this year.

Worth Noting

  • Buffalo is a pretty good team defensively. Remember that these statistics still include their game against Ohio State.
  • Other than Iowa State, all of these teams would rank in the top half of teams in total offense and three would rank in the top 35 when removing the Baylor game.
  • Other than Iowa State, all of these teams would rank in the top 65 in scoring defense with Buffalo in the top 10!
  • Kansas has already faced the second most prolific offense in the Big 12 (Tech) so their numbers are likely to hold steady or improve over the course of the season.
  • Iowa State is really bad but they have played 4 of the top 5 Big 12 teams already, their numbers aren't likely to get any worse and will probably improve somewhat by the end of the season.

The effect of Baylor's Defense

I'll post the adjusted statistics here but suffice it to say, our defense is not really affecting our opponents. We have held every opponent (except West Virginia) below their non-Baylor average, impressively so against Buffalo, ULM, and ISU but in yards surrendered most of the numbers are right around the teams season averages. Much of this can be attributed to Baylor pulling the starters shortly after the second half kickoff and to a lesser extent to the pace we play at.

Opponent's Offensive Statistics and Rankings:

Games Yards Yds/Gm Rank Points Points/Gm Rank
Buffalo 8 3047 380.88 84 248 31.00 54
ULM 8 2865 358.13 98 159 19.88 108
WVU 8 3161 395.13 78 183 22.88 T-94
KSU 7 2850 407.14 71 216 30.86 57
ISU 7 2457 351.00 101 178 25.43 85
Kansas 7 2034 290.57 117 124 17.71 114

Adjusted for the Baylor game:

Games Yards Yds/Gm Rank Points Points/Gm Rank
Buffalo 7 2684 383.43 83 235 33.57 T-39
ULM 7 2570 367.14 93 152 21.71 100
