Baylor Football Recruiting Update- It's National Signing Day!
Congratulations to the Baylor Football Recruiting Class of 2012!
Here are your best NSD resources for the Baylor community:
Baylor Bears Official Athletic Site - BaylorBears.com - Football- That link should take you to the Signing Day HQ for Baylor Football. There are links there to the press conference (when it happens) and blurbs about each player as they sign and fax in their LOIs. With everything our sports communication staff has done this year, this should probably be the first place you go for NSD news (besides ODB, of course). Scout.com: Bears Signing Day Central- Get the most up-to-the-minute info on signing day events right here at BearsIllustrated.com. BearsTruth.com- Baylor's 247Sports site. SicEmSports.com- Baylor's Rivals.com site.
Here's a list straight from BaylorBears.com of everyone who has signed to date:

#1 overall recruit DGB to Mizzou.
Congrats Mizzou for being located in the home state of the top recruit in the country.

Heh.
Still, good get for them. This should help make/keep them competitive as a mid-tier SEC team, no?
Franklin + DGB + their RB by committee thing they have going/were forced into last year from injury seems to make for a decent offense.

Interesting site that averages each of the recruiting services into one ranking.
Has Baylor 27th in the country.

Wooo!
Considering Baylor’s issues at DL, this feels like the biggest accomplishment recruit-wise in the past few years.

The two mystery recruits were Kaleb Moore and Shymacheal Chatman, both of whom will probably be grayshirts.
Here is what Briles says about Moore:
“Kaleb is a great jumper. He’s a 24-foot long jumper, 47-foot triple, 6-8 high jump all as a junior last year. We think that he should medal in all of those plus a chance to medal in a relay. This is also a guy who just started playing football two years ago. We think that the sky’s the limit for him because he can do a lot of things on the field with his athletic ability.”
Chatman:
“Shamycheal is a great, great player. He’s a great kid who is mature. He can run, he has played defensive end and linebacker. He has tremendous upside. We think that we’ll be able to develop him through our strength and training and coaching on the field.”

Ok, I'm going to start posting blurbs from the Baylor website about the
players that I think we should be focusing on. First up will be the Rival’s 4* guys…
Corey Coleman
National top 250 recruit from Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas, excelled at rusher, receiver and returner… Played under head coach Randy Robertson at PHS… Totaled 3,864 all-purpose yards and 61 touchdowns in final three prep seasons… Rated 118th overall national prospect by 247Sports.com and 232nd on Rivals250… National position rankings among receivers: No. 11 by 247Sports.com, No. 17 by ESPN.com, No. 23 by Scout.com, No. 38 by Rivals.com… Rankings among recruits in state of Texas: No. 15 by 247Sports.com, No. 15 on Austin American Statesman’s Texas Fabulous 55, No. 20 on Rivals.com’s Lone Star Recruiting Top 100, No. 25 by ESPN.com, No. 33 on SuperPrep’s Texas 121… Also listed on Texas top 100 listings by Waco Tribune-Herald (top 30), Houston Chronicle Texas Top 100, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Fab-44 Top 100… Rated fourth-best athlete in state by Lone Star Recruiting..
Briles seems…pleased with this. =)
BRILES ON COLEMAN
“Corey is going to be the guy. He’s a big-time player and a great young man with tremendous upside. Once he gets involved in our system, the sky’s the limit and we’re going there. We were very excited about him committing to us early. He fought off people and stayed loyal to Baylor. He’s going to have a great career here.”
"I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." - Jon Daniels
Javonte Magee - DE/DT
6-5, 265 – Fr. – San Antonio, Texas (Sam Houston HS)
Blue chip recruit and top 100 national prospect from Sam Houston High School in San Antonio… All-American defensive lineman rated 18th-best recruit nationally by 247Sports.com on Top247… Named 2011 SuperPrep All-American and U.S. Army All-American… Played under former Baylor All-American and current SHS head coach Gary Green… Listed No. 65 recruit nationally by Rivals.com on Rivals100 and No. 69 on Athlon Consensus 100… National position rankings: No. 4 DT by 247Sports.com, No. 7 DE by Rivals.com, No. 11 DE by Scout.com, No. 20 DT by ESPN.com…
BRILES ON MAGEE
“Javonte might be the most heralded defensive recruit we’ve signed. He’s got tremendous, tremendous upside. He’s extremely agile, athletic, and is a person who just possesses everything you look for on that side of the ball.”
I think that Briles might be overselling the agility a bit, but that’s just based on what I’ve seen in a very limited sample. He is definitely very athletic, with great speed/size and good discipline [for a HS player]. I’m not sure where he will be played on the DL, but I expect him to impress.
"I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." - Jon Daniels
Heh, I guess he has a JuCo pairing, too.
Rivals has us as already receiving a commitment from Joey Searcy [though the official site doesn’t have it].
He’s a 6’0", 310 DT with good size. Hopefully, he can adequately replace the production that Nick Jean-Baptiste was giving us towards the end of the year last year.

Brian Nance - LB
6-2, 210 – Fr. – Euless, Texas (Trinity HS)
All-American linebacker and top 100 national prospect from Trinity High School in Euless, Texas… Rated No. 84 overall recruit nationally by 247Sports.com on Top247… Named 2011 SuperPrep All-American and U.S. Army All-American… Played under head coach Steve Lineweaver at THS… National position rankings among outside linebackers: No. 6 by 247Sports.com, No. 18 by ESPN.com, No. 27 by Rivals.com, No. 31 by Scout.com… Ranked a top-30 recruit in Texas by 247Sports.com (No. 8)
BRILES ON NANCE
“Brian is just a great, great football player, a sideline-to-sideline guy. He’s a great leader with great instincts and great passion. We’re really excited for him to get here and get after it full-tilt. We know that he’s got an outstanding future in front of him and we’re glad that it’s at Baylor.”
Baylor has recruited a 4* LB before in Earl Patin who was a good, if not extraordinary LB for Baylor. Given that we’re losing Coffee and haven’t exactly been the best at recruiting LB/Front7 guys, it shouldn’t take too terribly long for Nance to see playing time. Maybe we don’t see him in 2012 (Mark can speak to this, perhaps), but it would be disappointing if he weren’t contributing by 2013.*
*Realize that recruits very often disappoint us, even if they are highly thought of coming in.
"I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." - Jon Daniels
Nance dual-signed with a JUCO, but shouldn't have any problems academically. It was just a precaution.

In line with this,
I’m assuming the coaches are going to expect near-immediate contributions from JuCo signee Eddie Lackey.
6-2, 220 – Jr. – Murrieta, Calif. (Riverside CC)
Transfer linebacker from Riverside (Calif.) Community College… Mid-year signee enrolled at Baylor in January 2012, will participate in 2012 spring drills… Ranked No. 77 on SuperPrep Juco 100 listing..
BRILES ON LACKEY
“Eddie’s fast, tough, intense, aggressive, focused and motivated. Just what you look for in an inside linebacker. We’re pumped about having Eddie here.”

Anybody know what's going on with Joey Searcy?
All the recruiting websites show that he signed with us, but he isn’t listed on the baylor page with the rest of the class. It does show Lackey and Hawthorne though, the other two early signers.
He signed and enrolled.

Rivals Team Rank by position. Baylor is...
25th @ WR
14th @ LB
17th @ DE
Currently missing out on the Top 25 overall, from that link, you can get to the team position rank.

Best class I can remember
I’m still a little bitter about my time at Baylor being highlighted by Reggie Newhouse catching passes in games we were getting killed in, Sepulveda punting, and Robert Quiroga always making a good tackle on special teams…
Times have changed…
Hah
You must have been there around my time. How could you forget about Willie!?!

One thing I'm going to be doing in the next couple of days is putting together a spreadsheet of our football roster by class/position
To try to figure out what we’re going to need for the 2013 class. I saw one done by a fan of another school and thought it was a really interesting way to look at it, so I’m going to copy the idea.
I’m going to have to guess about how many of each particular position our coaching staff wants, and that’s where I’m going to need the most help.
